Jack Maier, Frisch's chairman, arts patron
Jack Maier, chairman of Cincinnati's Frisch's Restaurant Inc. and a friend to Cincinnati's arts organizations, died Wednesday.
He was 79.
Mr. Maier got his start as a part-time car attendant and fountain boy at the Frisch's Mainliner Drive-In, owned by his father-in-law, David Frisch, founder of the restaurant chain that bears the family's name. The restaurant is on Wooster Pike in Fairfax.
Mr. Maier later bought a Frisch's franchise. In 1970, he became chairman, president and CEO of the company and led the company in that capacity until 1989, when his son, Craig F. Maier, became president and CEO.
Under the senior Mr. Maier's tenure, Frisch's opened trading on the American Stock Exchange in 1973. It eliminated drive-in restaurants in 1984.
As of May 30, the company operated 88 family-style restaurants using the Big Boy trade name and 26 Golden Corral restaurants. Frisch's had also licensed 31 Big Boy restaurants to other operators.
All of the restaurants are located in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.
Over the years, Jack Maier and his wife, Blanche, have been huge supporters of the arts, particularly the Cincinnati Ballet. Frisch's has sponsored the ballet company's annual holiday production of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" for more than 25 years, donating more than $2 million.
