James Fritsch, Reds fan was decorated vet
James N. Fritsch of Latonia, a faithful Cincinnati Reds fan who earned a Bronze Star three times in World War II, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. He was 83.
Mr. Fritsch's son recalled his father as a kind and humble man who didn't talk about his war experience much until later in life, but, when he did, he expressed pride.
"He truly was a kind and honest type of father, " said Marty Fritsch, of Independence, the youngest of Mr. Fritsch's six children. "He was a simple guy, but he was a very loving and humble person. He had a lot of friends. People really loved and respected him."
Mr. Fritsch was an Army staff sergeant with the 8th Armored Infantry, and served in Germany during the war. He earned a Purple Heart and one of his three Bronze Stars in the Ruhr Valley when his squad was attacked by the Germans, Marty Fritsch said. Several of the men in Mr. Fritsch's squad were killed, and Mr. Fritsch was wounded.
"He saw a lot of combat in his three years (in the Army), " Marty Fritsch said. "He never really talked a lot about it until later in his life. But he was real proud of his service."
Mr. Fritsch was born and raised in Covington and graduated from Holy Cross High School. He met his future wife, Loraine Requardt, as a teenager. The two were married
for 62 years, Marty Fritsch said.
Trained as a machinist, Mr. Fritsch worked 10 years for the C&O; Railroad before going to work at General Electric, where he spent 30 years as a foreman building jet engines for such military planes as the F-4.
After his retirement in 1981, he turned his attention to three of his favorite hobbies: woodworking, painting and the Cincinnati Reds.
"He loved baseball. He absolutely loved the Reds, " Marty Fritsch said. "He went (to the games) when he could. And he listened to or watched all the games. A big Reds fan." He was also a member of the Holy Cross War Veterans and the Hut Athletic Club.
He also is survived by his wife, Loraine; a son, Steven J. Fritsch of Crestview Hills; daughters, Jane Kennedy, of Edgewood, Carol Hickey of Edgewood, Terri Elledge of Eau Gallie, Fla., and Shellie Muck of Edgewood; 14 grandchildren and six grandchildren.
