Catherine Dutle, 'had a smile for everyone'
When Catherine A. Dutle was raising her seven children on Murnan Road in Cold Spring, she organized her neighbors into a block rosary.
Once a week, all the Roman Catholics on the block would meet in someone's home to pray the rosary together. The next week, they would meet in someone else's home.
The gatherings not only helped the participants' spiritual lives, they also helped the neighbors bond, said her son, Michael Dutle of Newport.
Mrs. Dutle, who died Monday at 80, was a very religious woman who instilled that spirituality into her children. "Prayer before meals and bedtime was a ritual, " her son said.
She grew up in Camp Springs, where she attended St. Joseph's Church and the parochial school there. In 1954, she and her late husband, Howard Dutle, moved to Cold Spring, where they attended a different St. Joseph's Church until her death.
She served as a volunteer for the church's credit union and also for the Parish Kitchen in Covington.
Raising her seven children, Mrs. Dutle had to be frugal. Her son remembers eating a lot of peanut butter and bologna.
She loved to sew, and she made most of the clothes that her daughters wore. Her son said he thinks he remembers her making dresses from sacks of chicken feed.
When her children had children, she helped raise them as well. She loved to read to her grandchildren and show her granddaughters how to do girl things, like wearing makeup, her son said.
"She always had a smile for everyone, " he said.
