Dixie Heights athlete, honors student Timmy Alexander, inspired with courage
In football parlance, Timmy Alexander faced fourth and long, but he never gave up.
A former Dixie Heights High School football player, Timmy, 18, of Crescent Springs, died Saturday in Children's Hospital, Cincinnati, of leukemia.
"From the time he was diagnosed he faced it head on. He was very positive and convinced he was going to beat it and return to normal, " said Timmy's mother, Kathy Alexander.
Last month Timmy received the National Football Foundation Award of Courage.
Although diagnosed with leukemia, Timmy was a member of the Dixie Heights team this past fall, playing offensive and defensive tackle. He was 6-4, and 245 pounds.
Along with his efforts on the football field, Timmy also excelled in the classroom, earning honor-roll status during his most recent grading period, his mother said. His long-range plans had been to attend college and perhaps study accounting.
Both his family and his teammates and coaches were very supportive of his efforts, Mrs. Alexander said, and he was able to play in most games. He entered the hospital shortly after the end of the season and remained until late December. He was home during the Christmas season, but re-entered the hospital Jan. 13.
At one point last year, Timmy received a bone-marrow transplant from his older brother, Christopher.
"He never complained, " Mrs. Alexander said of her youngest son. "Now he's a special angel."
Timmy was also an intramural basketball player with Beechgrove Boosters. Sports were his major interest, his mother said.
During his hospital stay, several Cincinnati Bengals stopped in to cheer him, and late last year the Bengals played a benefit basketball game against Dixie faculty members to raise money for medical expenses. A previously scheduled fund-raiser dance is Friday at the school.
Along with his mother and brother, survivors include his father, James Alexander; sisters, Lisa Alexander and Kimberly Alexander, both at home; maternal grandfather, Jack Mitts of Florence; and paternal grandmother, Blanche Alexander of Covington.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Covington. Memorials are suggested to the Timmy Alexander Memorial Fund with Huntington Banks of Northern Kentucky.
