Mark Peterson, psychologist, avid gardener
Mark Peterson was a psychologist and financial planner with a myriad of special interests.
"He liked to do a lot of things, " said Mr. Peterson's wife of nearly 30 years, Sandy Peterson. "He enjoyed gardening, especially roses. He refinished furniture, enjoyed photography and liked golf and other sports."
Mr. Peterson, 55, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after suffering from cancer.
He graduated from Xavier University with a master's degree in psychology.
Mr. Peterson was a practicing psychologist for 25 years and served as executive director of Mental Health Services West for 10 years.
"He was a good administrator and a good diagnostician, " said Mrs. Peterson. "He not only developed programs, but also helped clients in those programs."
Mr. Peterson decided to leave the mental health field because things like insurance and funding were taking too much of his time, said his wife.
He developed an interest in financial planning and was employed in Cincinnati by the John Zorio Agency of the Ohio National Financial Group.
"He was pretty easy going, very compassionate, understanding and helpful, " said Mrs. Peterson. "He had lots of friends and liked spending time with his son and enjoyed family activities."
Mr. Peterson was a member of the parish council at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger and belonged to the Alano Club.
Other survivors include a son, Nathan Peterson of Florence; his mother, Eileen Peterson of Cincinnati; sisters, Patricia Ripley and Gwen Sheffield, both of Cincinnati, and Jennifer Ripley of Versailles, Ind.; and a brother, Scott Peterson of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Erlanger.
Visitation will begin at the church at 10 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in St. Mary cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

John Alexander Baker, 94, of Ryland Heights, died at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a self-employed custom slipcover maker, a former member of Latonia Christian Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a son, John Daniel Baker of Erlanger; and a sister, Barbara Louise Schochet of Cincinnati.
Services were this morning at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Latonia Christian Church, 3900 Decoursey Ave., Covington, Ky. 41015.
William Newton Cruey, 93, of Independence, died at 8:03 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired employee of Newport Steel, a member of Disabled American Veterans and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Audrey Cruey, died in 1988. A son, Donald Cruey, died in 1982.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Ernest N. Gaines, 80, of Hesler, died Wednesday at Owenton Manor. He was owner of Gaines Garage in Hesler and a mechanic, and a deacon and Sunday school teacher with Richland Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Iva McCormick Gaines; sons, Rodney Gaines of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Terry Gaines of Owenton; a brother, Charles H. Gaines of Lexington; sisters, Willetta Cooke and Renae Juett, both of Owenton; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Amo Pope Henderson, 85, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a retired employee of 3M Co., a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church and the 3M Club. Her husband, Willis Henderson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Diana Henderson Smith of Dry Ridge; a son, Donnie Henry of Falmouth; brothers, Ira Pope of Florida, George Pope of Greensburg, Ind., and Henry Pope of Cynthiana; sisters, Cordelia Bennett, Helen Mitchell and Mary Sue Coppage, all of Cynthiana, and Joy Smolinski of Mount Clemons, Mich.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
James E. Kern Sr., 88, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bellevue, died Monday at his home. He was a cashier with Tampa Dog Track. His wife, Maxine Huneke Kern, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, James Kern Jr. of Spring Hill, Fla.; brothers, Arthur Kern of Harrisburg, Pa., and Jerome Kern of Fort Wright; sisters, Grace Busse of Fort Mitchell and Sister Alice Marita Kern of Nazareth; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 11:45 a.m. Monday. Willie "Billie" Maddox, 88, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Cedar Ridge Health Campus, Cynthiana. She was a retired employee of the Kentucky Probation and Parole Department and the Kawneer Corp., and a member of Cynthiana Christian Church. She was a former member of the Democratic Women's Club of Harrison County. Her husband, Kenneth Maddox, preceded her in death.

Nola Frances Mardis, 94, of Independence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Barbara Church in Erlanger, Covington and Cincinnati senior citizens clubs, and St. Ann's Altar Society. Her husband, Harry J. Mardis, died in 1970. A son, Jerome Mardis, died in 2003.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Mardis of Crescent Springs; a daughter, Pearl Mardis of Independence; and five grandchildren.

Anita J. Martin, 68, of Fort Wright, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was an optometrist's assistant and a co-founder and former member of the Fort Wright Emergency Response Team. She was a member of the St. Agnes Church choir, a former member of the Fort Wright Civic Club and was instrumental in planning and designing the Fort Wright Memorial. Her husband, former Fort Wright mayor Donald K. Martin, died in 2002.
Survivors include sons, Donald Martin Jr. of Fort Wright and Steven Martin of Erlanger; daughters, Marianne "Murph" Averdick and Jennifer Kinsley, both of Fort Wright, and Nancy Martin of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Virginia "Ginny" Vulhop of Fort Mitchell; and 11 grandchildren.

Linda Gray Roberts, 59, of Warsaw, died Tuesday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. She attended Oakland Baptist Church.
Survivors include her mother, Frances Gray Roberts of Warsaw; and a brother, Larry Owen Roberts of Warsaw.

Mary Margaret Scheitz, 80, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at her home. She was a nurse and a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. She was a bereavement counselor at the church, a tutor at its school and a volunteer with the Welcome House.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph R. Scheitz; daughters, Mary Beth Garascia of South Bend, Ind., Rebecca Anne Backus of Florence and Clair Elise Breetz of Alexandria; a son, Thomas Mark Scheitz of Florence; a brother, Louis Hellmann of Latonia; sisters, Jean Teipel of Fort Wright, Phyllis Herbst of Delhi Hills, Ohio, and Betty Bohman of Edgewood; 16 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Gertrude Mae Tayce, 89, of Florence, died Wednesday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Earl Tayce Sr., died in 1982.
Survivors include sons, Earl Tayce Jr. of Erlanger and Kenny Tayce of Union; a daughter, Carole Ann Richards of Florence; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
