Margery Thomas Rouse, was dedicated to teaching
Margery Thomas Rouse lived in the same house all her life and never drove a car, but she ventured out to become a pioneer.
When she became chairman of the board at the Erlanger Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) she was the first female to hold that position in Kentucky.
She was the first female chair of the intercollegiate athletics committee at Northern Kentucky University, where the annual outstanding female athlete award is named in her honor.
Mrs. Rouse, 84, of Erlanger, died Tuesday.
The graduate of Lloyd Memorial High School and the University of Kentucky taught English at Lloyd and Dixie Heights high schools before staying home to rear a family.
She returned to teaching English at the UK Northern Community College and remained a member of the faculty as the institution grew and became Northern Kentucky University.
She developed the popular "Bible as Literature" course at NKU and taught it many years before her retirement and election as professor emeritus of literature and language.
After retirement she remained close to the university and was a member of the "Friends of the Steely Library" committee.
She was a member of the Lloyd Memorial High School Alumni Hall of Fame, Delta Kappa Gamma and Christian Women's Fellowship.
"She was a very, very intelligent woman, but also a very simple person, " said Mrs. Rouse's daughter, Lucy R. Riffle of Erlanger.
"She loved to cook and garden. And she canned every year. She taught me how to can vegetables because she wanted it to be carried on."
Lucy Riffle said her mother was "the best role model anyone could have wanted."
"She sewed and made all my clothes when I was a girl, " she said. "She was a gourmet cook. We never sat down to any fast foods. We had a full dinner every single night, even when she was working full-time.
"She absolutely valued education. A day never went by when she didn't pull a word game out of the paper and work it. She had great language skills."
Since Mrs. Rouse never drove a car, she got to work by sometimes riding with her husband, Clyde Rouse, who died in 1991, or by taking a taxicab or by paying college students to drive her to and from college.
Other survivors include a son, Thomas L. Rouse of Erlanger; a sister, Shirley Axel of Urbana, Ill., and three grandchildren.
