David Eviston, loved pool parties, theater
Born into a family of 10 children, David Michael Eviston always wanted to be surrounded by people.
"He had as many parties as a person could humanly have, " said his son, Todd Eviston of Peotone, Ill. "'Let's have some laughs, let's have some fun, everybody can come to my house, let's do it.' That was him."
Mr. Eviston, who died Thursday at 63, loved to play the host.
His son remembers lots of pool parties when he was growing up, when the family lived on Woodlawn Terrace in Newport.
"He always wanted to make people laugh, and he always wanted to be surrounded by friends and family, " Todd Eviston said.
Mr. Eviston also loved to build things. At one time, the family home had three decks in the back yard, simply because he liked working in landscape design, his son said.
Born and raised in Newport, Mr. Eviston attended Covington Latin School, where he won awards in English and speech. When he was 15, he took a job sweeping up after performances of the Cincinnati Opera.
That led to a job working with the stagehands, and Mr. Eviston's entrance into the Cincinnati Stage Employees Local No. 5.
"He had a lifelong love for the theater, " his son said, and he thought of himself as a master of the technical arts of lighting, stage design and set design. He studied those arts at the University of Cincinnati, and even taught them in the early '60s.
The English degree he earned from the former Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More) helped him when he served as the business agent for the union for 30 years, said his brother, Kevin Eviston of Wilder. He negotiated all the contracts for the stagehands and solicited new jobs for them.
Mr. Eviston served with the union for 45 years altogether, until a stroke permanently disabled him four years ago. He spent his last years at the Baptist Convalescent Home in Newport.
