Velma Abell helped start community newspaper
Velma Abell of Villa Hills was a role model as a wife, mother and community member.
She served as city clerk in Villa Hills and Crescent Springs in the 1970s. She helped found the Voice of Villa Hills, a community newspaper, in the 1960s.
Mrs. Abell insisted that she and her husband, Joseph, share household duties. That meant that, on any given day, you could find Mrs. Abell balancing the family checkbook and Mr. Abell supervising their four daughters as they brushed their teeth.
"What she did was give me the gift of my father as an everyday parent, which doesn't happen a lot even in today's time, " said one daughter, Paula Weber of Villa Hills.
Mrs. Abell died Friday at Madonna Manor Nursing Home in Villa Hills. She was 81.
Mrs. Abell was a native of Louisville who got married
in 1947.
She stayed at home while her children were young, then hired on with a temporary service that sent her to do office jobs for businesses such as accounting firms and hospitals in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati.
Mrs. Abell and Joann Vogt, who is deceased, founded the Voice of Villa Hills. "They wanted to have a community newspaper that would be able to welcome new people to Villa Hills, as well as promote friendships in the city, " said Mrs. Weber.
The Voice of Villa Hills continues to be published by the Civic Club and is delivered free to homes the last weekend of every month.
Mrs. Weber describes her mother as "a woman before her time in many ways."
For example, Mrs. Weber said, her mother helped prepare taxes for low-income seniors, took transcendental meditation at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, learned how to work a word processor decades ago and took up square dancing for social and health reasons.
Mrs. Abell was a member of the Kentucky Cousins and the Vagabond Tandem square dancing groups, but she had to give that up when she went into the nursing home nine years ago. She also was a member of the Villa Hills Homemakers, the St. Ann's Ladies Society, and the Happy Timers senior citizens group at St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs.
"She had a wonderful sense of humor, " said Mrs. Weber. "She looked for challenges. She was a problem-solver.
"She was very assertive, but she was never nasty.
"She wasn't really outwardly political, but valued herself as woman and a mother and a wife and a contributor to the community."
In addition to her husband and Mrs. Weber, Mrs. Abell is survived by daughters Mary Jo Rueger of Delhi, Ohio, Suzanne Gabennesch of Ludlow and Beth Manning of Villa Hills; a sister, Juanita Howell of Louisville; 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
