Alvin Miller, started physical fitness early

When he was 1-year-old, Alvin J. Miller was voted the most perfect child in his age group at the Knights of Pythias Bazaar in Covington.

It foreshadowed honors to come.

Mr. Miller, a lifelong Covington resident who died Saturday at 87, became interested in physical fitness while still a child.

In 1936, he represented the Fenwick Club of Cincinnati in the Midwest Championship for Golden Gloves boxing, but lost in the finals.

From 1937 through 1939, he served as a calisthenics instructor at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Walton. There, he also learned his lifelong trade, plumbing.

During his Army service during World War II, he was picked from 150, 000 Fort Benning trainees as having the best physique.

In a newspaper article from 1943, he credited his shape to exercise and "very moderate living." He urged would-be bodybuilders to drink two glasses of beer and quit; smoke not more than three cigarettes a day; and get plenty of sleep and regular meals.

His interest in physical fitness made him a man ahead of his time, said his niece, Kathleen Romero.

After the war, he was photographed lifting German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's weights at the Desert Fox's home, where he and fellow soldiers were recovering from shrapnel wounds.

When he returned to Covington, he worked as the city's plumbing inspector for many years.

He supported the Parish Kitchen in Covington with monthly checks for more than 50 years, and also sent money overseas to support poor children.

He often gave money to down-and-out people on the streets of downtown Cincinnati, where he liked to read the newspaper at the Westin Hotel and read psychology and spirituality books at the main branch of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

He always wore a loud Hawaiian shirt and white pants, with a red, green or yellow sports coat that didn't necessarily match the shirt.

His nieces and nephews knew him as "the balloon man, " because he was always blowing up balloons for every occasion and no occasion at all, his niece said. He also liked giving them half dollars with stickers on them sprayed with cologne.

He kept in shape in later years through swimming. His fellow residents at Baptist Towers, where he moved in 1998, chuckled about him going out in the sun to do exercises.

"He had a presence, wherever he was, " his niece said.

Other survivors include a sister, Margaret Buckholz of Covington, nieces and nephews.
