Roger Kathman, loved family, church and cars
Roger Kathman Sr. loved his family, his church and his cars.
Mr. Kathman, 90, of Lakeside Park, died Sunday at the Baptist Village Care Center in Erlanger.
Mr. Kathman was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Lakeside Park for 53 years.
"He and my mother brought all six of us kids to church every Sunday and sat us in the front row, " said his daughter, Barb Riley of Hebron. "After our mother died we used to say that he was married
to the church now."
Riley said Mr. Kathman was so active recruiting people into the church and helping out as an usher and Eucharistic minister people began calling him Fr. Roger.
Mr. Kathman also loved cars and bought a new one every three years.
"He loved Cadillacs and had several of them, " said Riley. "He took great care of them, shining them up with his linen handkerchief, and they always looked and smelled brand new. When he was ready for a new one, people would line up to buy his old car."
Mr. Kathman was a salesman at several companies in the area, including RIS Paper Co. (formerly Diem and Wing Paper co.), from which he retired in 1985. Riley said he told her he hated to retire and would have worked until he was 100 if they let him.
His wife, Ethel Herbert Kathman, died in 1988.
Other survivors include sons, Roger Kathman Jr. of Sarasota, Fla., and Bob Kathman of Boynton Beach, Fla.; daughters Peggy King of Zellwood, Fla., Linda Emmett of Edgewood and Nancy Cahill of Erlanger; brothers, William Kathman of Crestview Hills, Philip Kathman, John Kathman and Donald Kathman, all of Edgewood; sisters, Elaine Manilla of Huntington, W.Va., and Blanche Huber of Harrison, Ohio; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Marietta Conrad Brooks, 95, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker, a member of Madisonville Baptist Church, and a former member of Dry Ridge Baptist Church. Her husband, Charles J. Brooks, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Charles Conrad Brooks of Cincinnati; a brother, Harmon B. Conrad of Clearwater, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Dry Ridge Baptist Church, 19 Broadway, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.
Mildred L. Beschman Burton, 96, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Charles Lawrence Case, 71, of Alexandria, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired yard conductor with CSX Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Case; daughters, Debbie Bullock, Terri Sheffel and Diana Weber, all of Alexandria; a sister, Dorothy Arwood of Russell Springs; a sister, Zelma Reeder of Florence; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Silver Grove Christian Church, P.O. Box 430, Silver Grove, Ky. 41085.
Ruby Garnet Hartley Chadderton, 86, of Erlanger, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Thirl Chadderton; a daughter, Cheryl Neff of Rabbit Hash; a sister, Carole Griffith of Ashland; 1 granddaughter and a great-granddaughter.
No services are planned. Cremation will be at Northern Kentucky Cremation Services. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Albert Lee Chipman, 48, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an employee of New Perceptions Inc., Edgewood.
Survivors include sisters, Pat Shelton of Florence, Libby Goodridge of Hebron and Kathy Marsh of Independence; brothers, Bill Chipman of Walton, Dutch Chipman of Wayne, Wayne Chipman of Independence and Bobby Chipman of Crescent Springs.

Ward Leo Clark, 70, of Mount Olivet, died Sunday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. He was a retired employee of the Ladish Co., formerly of Kawneer Co.

Doris J. Gastright, 68, of Villa Hills, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a front-end manager with the Kroger's grocery store in Fort Mitchell, a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs and a volunteer with the Crescent Springs Fire Department Life Squad. Her husband, Frank Gastright, died in 1999.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy Bartz of Cincinnati, Allesanne Meihaus of Fort Wright and Barbara Fritz of Burlington; sons, Frank H. Gastright of Florence, Armin Gastright of Pine Island, Fla., and Michael D. Gastright of Covington; brothers, Ed Lutz of Cincinnati and Bob Lutz of Oakley, Ohio; a sister, Mary Lutz of Norwood, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Alberta Fay "Wiggins" Hedgecock, 78, of Union, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker.

Alvin J. Miller, 87, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

James A. Sorrell, 82, of Edgewood, died at 5:35 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired tool and die maker with Powell Electric Co. in Houston, and a manufacturer of fly-fishing equipment. He was a member of St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, where he was an usher, a former grand knight of the Knights of Columbus and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Matthews Sorrell; sons, Robert Sorrell of Edgewood and Michael Sorrell of Cleveland; a half-brother, Tom Sorrell of Bellevue; and half-sisters, Judy McGovern and Linda Alerding, both of Bellevue.

Justin Robert Terbrueggen, 25, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at VanWert County Hospital, VanWert, Ohio, of injuries suffered while riding a bull.
He was a service technician with Ohmart-Vega of Cincinnati and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his parents, Joel and Carol Terbrueggen of Madeira, Ohio; a sister, Renee Terbrueggen of Maineville, Ohio; and grandparents, Robert and Ruth Terbrueggen of Mason, Ohio, and John Juengst of Madeira.

Gordon H. Thompson, 75, of California, died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday at his home.
He was a retired Air Force veteran and former maintenance department worker with St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a deacon of Persimmon Grove Baptist Church, a trustee of Sun Valley Senior Citizens and a member of Sun Valley Breakfast Club and the United States Air Force Sergeants Association. His first wife, Betty Lou Thompson, died in 1970.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Yvonne Thompson; daughters, Karen Bell of California, Mary Class of Latonia, Janet Rickels of Alexandria and Louann Thompson of Florence; a sister, Mary Frances Johnson of Winchester; and five grandchildren.

Edna M. Welch, 80, of Ashland, formerly of Bellevue, died Sunday at Kings Daughters Medical Center, Ashland. She was a retired bookkeeper with Welch Contractors, Bellevue. Her husband, William Welch, died in 1993.

Bradly Ray Williamson, 28, of Sanders, died Sunday near Carrollton. He was an employee of North American Steel.

Betty Lee Wilson, 68, of Corinth, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a retired employee of Fruit of the Loom and a member of Beechwood Assembly of God.
Her husband, Estill Wilson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Danny Wilson of Dry Ridge; a sister, Patsy Spurlock of Georgetown; a brother, Herbert C. Taylor; two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
