George W. Hessler, air traffic controller
As a boy, George William Hessler loved it when his father took him to the Blue Ash airport to watch parachutists jump out of airplanes.
His hobby quickly became aviation.
As an adult, Mr. Hessler's advice to youngsters was, "Choose a career you can be passionate about."
He followed his own advice and worked 32 years as an air traffic controller, the last seven as chief controller at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
Mr. Hessler, 87, of Crestview Hills, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center in Fort Wright.
Reared in the Cincinnati suburb of Mount Healthy, Mr. Hessler learned air traffic controlling while serving in the Army during World War II.
His career of government service as an air traffic controller took him to Columbus, Peoria, Ill., New York and Cleveland before he became chief of the Cincinnati airport controllers in 1969.
When Mr. Hessler retired in 1976, he told The Cincinnati Post that working as an air traffic controller was an exciting and exacting profession.
"It's the greatest job at an airport, " he said. "Here is where the action is. Everybody is asking us what's happening.
"It's an exacting job done by egotists who are also perfectionists. We have to feel we're the best because if you don't feel that way, you couldn't stay ahead of the game. It's a challenge, but it's a challenge you want.
"Air traffic control is one of the most, if not the most, exacting jobs in an airport, especially one the size of Cincinnati. With planes arriving and departing less than minutes apart, there is little room for boredom. Boredom could mean tragedy."
Mr. Hessler's daughter, Sharon Howard of Florence, said her father reveled in his work.
"He always said he was the luckiest man alive because his career and hobby were the same thing -- aviation, " she said. "He had a pilot's license, but he loved air traffic controlling."
Mrs. Howard described her father as a "character."
"He always had a joke, he always had a wise crack, he always kept everybody laughing, " she said. "He was quite social."
Mr. Hessler was a natural leader.
"He never belonged to an organization he didn't end up leading, " said his daughter. "He was always the president of whatever he was involved in."
Mr. Hessler was a Boy Scout leader and hiked the Appalachian Trail with Scouts.
He was married
62 years to Mary Hessler, who survives.
"To his dying day he knew his wife was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, " said his daughter.
