Edward Rust, was fun father and grandfather
Edward Jacob Rust loved children, perhaps because he was like a big kid himself.
That's how his granddaughter, Kim Stephens of Amelia, Ohio, described him. He was a fun grandfather, she said.
Even during his last days, spent at the Newport Baptist Convalescent Center, his eyes would light up and he would smile when his children or grandchildren came to visit, said his wife, Bernice Howell Rust.
"He was very lively and fun, " she said. "He could be a prankster."
Mr. Rust, who died Tuesday at 89, grew up on a farm in Cold Spring. He lived most of his life on a tract of land from the same farm.
He served in the Army during World War II, working as a chaplain's assistant in the Philippines. A local newspaper wrote of his chance, wartime encounter with three of his cousins in the Dutch East Indies.
After the war, he managed a farmer's market in Cincinnati for many years, then became the business manager for the Hamilton County Vegetable Growers Association.
When the association went out of business, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Cincinnati, his last job.
When they weren't working, he and his wife liked to square-dance with a group called The Vagabonds. They also went camping with their square-dancing friends.
