Everett Craven Jr., taught children love for baseball
Everett Joseph Craven Jr. was a quiet leader who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Craven spent two years in the Army after the Korean War and was a tank commander. He later became a buyer with Kruse Wholesale Hardware Co. in Cincinnati and was an avid baseball and softball player.
He passed his love of America's pastime to his children and grandchildren, said his wife of 42 years, Sue Craven.
"He was well-liked by the people he worked with, " Mrs. Craven said. "He liked to follow sports on television and play with the grandkids."
Mr. Craven, 65, of Latonia, died at 3:40 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was a retired buyer with Kruse Wholesale Hardware Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Mr. Craven grew up in Covington. He met his wife after she saw him pitching and playing the outfield for a church league team.
"He was a good player. Baseball was his sport and he taught all the boys to play baseball, " according to Mrs. Craven.
"He was very quiet, but he would come up with a few funny remarks."
Other survivors include his sons, Tim Craven of Ryland Heights, Dennis Craven of Prospect, Evey Craven of Latonia and Michael Craven of Atlanta; daughters, Connie Riesenbeck of Crescent Springs, Julie Henry of Atlanta, Chrissie Craven White of St. Louis and Kathy Fessler of Taylor Mill; a brother, Richard Craven of Edgewood; sisters, Ginny Roach of Okeechobee, Fla., Marilyn Mattingly of Covington and Arlene Conner of Walton; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.

Jerry Arens Sr., 56, of Cincinnati, formerly of Dayton, died Monday at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a tax examiner with the U.S. Department of Treasury, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Northside Council 1683, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Waldo Arens; sons, Ben Arens and Ed Arens, both of Cincinnati, Jerry Arens Jr. of Greenhills, Ohio, and Tim Arens of Dayton; his mother, Dorothy Schlueter Arens of Dayton; a brother, Thomas L. Arens of Dayton; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Little Flower, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Paul R. Young Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 2805 W. McMicken Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45225.
Emma Tripp Baird, 91, of Hurst, Texas, formerly of Covington, died Friday at H. E. B. Hospital in Hurst. She was a retired bookkeeper.
Survivors include a son, Robert Baird of Burlington; daughters, Janet Baird of Hurst and Jean Noell of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright, Ky., 41011.
Richard Paul Barcomb, 59, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 12:44 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was a telemarketer with St. Anthony Messenger.
Survivors include sons, Paul J. Barcomb and John R. Barcomb, both of Minneapolis; a daughter, Michele Barcomb of Minneapolis; a brother, William Barcomb of Southampton, Mass.; and a sister, Paul Winn of Greenville, Mass.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at St. Francis Church, Cincinnati. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Sandra Baxter, 17, died of a gunshot wound Saturday in her home in Florence.
She was a senior at Boone County High School, where she was active in speech and drama, and worked at Florence Buick.
Survivors include her parents, Raymond and Sandra Jean Baxter; a sister, Angie Baxter of Florence; a brother, Chris Baxter of Florence; paternal grandparents, Ted and Willa Baxter, of Salem, Ill.; maternal grandparents, Bill and Reva Smith of Greenville, Ill.; maternal great- grandmother Rachel Tetors, of Greenville, Ill.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home, Greenville, Ill. Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Florence.
Wilma Mae Brewster, 69, of Newport, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of the Open Bible Church of God, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, Virgil Brewster; daughters, Mary Phelps of Newport and Melissa Spivey of Georgia; a son, Albert Brawner of Newport; a stepson, Virgil Brewster of Newport; sisters, Elizabeth Fincher of Milford, Ohio, and Daisy Fite of Cincinnati; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 10 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Matthew Bryant, 65, of Waxahachie, Texas, formerly of Grants Lick, died Sunday at his home. He was a mechanic and driver with Consolidated Freight, Dallas, and a member of Aspen Grove Lodge 397 F&AM, Grants Lick. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Indra Consistory Valley of Covington and the Syrian Shrine, Cincinnati. He was a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Bryant; sons, Dwight Bryant of Beechmont, Ohio, and Greg Bryant of Waxahachie; daughters, Sheila Tyler and Natasha Bryant, both of Waxahachie; brothers, Everett Bryant of Danville, Delmer Bryant of Loveland, Ohio, and Walter Bryant of Nashville; a sister, Wilma Byrd of Grants Lick; and nine grandchildren.

Robert Henry Covington, 85, of Owenton, died Sunday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington. He was a farmer and a member of El Bethel Christian Church, Owenton.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Hunter Covington.

Helen Marie Davis, 81, of Carrollton, died at 3:08 p.m. Sunday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a sister, Christine McIntyre of Warsaw.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Tracy A. Fields, 23, of Burlington, was found dead Saturday at Big Bone Lick State Park in Boone County. He was a laborer with Fleet Tire Co., Florence.
Survivors include his mother, Judy Fields of Burlington; a brother, Jammie Fields of Elsmere; a sister, Becky Fields of Burlington; and maternal grandmother, Louella Lilly of Burlington.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in Belleview Baptist Cemetery.
James G. Geiger, 74, of Latonia, died at 6:40 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired machinist with Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. He was a member of American Legion Post 203, Latonia, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Clara Wilson of Latonia.

John Carmine Gentile, 69, of Covington, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired self-employed plumbing and electrical contractor and a member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post 7099, Covington. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Gentile; sons, John Gentile and D. J. Gentile, both of Miami and J. C. Gentile of Covington; daughters, Lani Mills of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Sharon Gentile of Miami; sisters, Antoinette LePine of Weston, Mass., and Frances Phillips of Dennis, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Charles Earl Heisel, 55, of Covington, died Sunday at St. John Nursing Home in Covington. He was supervisor of housekeeping with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Heisel; a daughter, Amber Heisel of Covington; a son, Alex Heisel of Covington; sisters, Virginia Honeycutt and Marie Lloyd, both of Berry, Ruth Sisson of Hebron, Mary Dyer of Colorado and Margaret Bay of Peach Grove; and brothers, Junior Heisel of Covington and Bud Showalter of Erlanger.

Lorraine E. Kohl, 91, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Leo C. Kohl, died in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Paul L. Kohl of Villa Hills; a daughter, Norma K. Frede of Cincinnati; a brother, Victor "Biddy" Buhr of Ft. Wright; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Douglas S. Manning, 72, of Covington, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
He was a civil engineer with Vogt, Ivers and Associates, Cincinnati, and a British Royal Army veteran of World War II.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Milford F. Martin, 69, of Ft. Mitchell, died Saturday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired employee of Hopple Plastics Co., Florence, and a member of Florence Baptist Temple, the Disabled American Veterans and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Martin; daughters, Schuyler Nagel of Edgewood and Tonya Price of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Todd Martin of Burlington; sisters, Nancy Strasinger and Doris Hines, both of Cincinnati, and Ollie May Laycock of Fairfield, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Paul Francis Meyer, 63, of Walton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a former printer and mechanic, and a retired Kentucky Department of Transportation maintenance worker. He also was a member of American Legion Post 123 in Norwood, Ohio.
Survivors include a son, Paul M. Meyer of Bellevue; daughters, Debbie M. Trostorff of Demossville and Polly M. Meyer of Park Hills; a brother, Robert W. Meyer of Orient, Ohio; a sister, Alma Rasch of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Clara Marie Ward, 87, of Ft. Thomas, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
She was a retired secretary and bookkeeper with Flerlage Marine Co., and a member of St. Therese Church, Southgate. She also was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post 5662, Newport.
Survivors include a niece, June Link of Southgate, whom she raised; a grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Lizetta Roetker Wolking, 88, of Covington, died at 12:47 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Leisure Timers, Ft. Wright, and St. Charles Care Center Auxiliary, Covington. Her husband, F. George "Rudy" Wolking, died in 1991.
Survivors include sons, Dick Wolking of Park Hills, Dennis Wolking of Edgewood and Fred Wolking, Hudson, Ohio; daughters, Judy McGovern of Ft. Mitchell, Carol Schmeing of Akron, Ohio, and Beverly Henn of Ft. Wright; a brother, Elmer Roetker of Covington; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
