JOHN CALVIN BROWN, 97, of Louisa, KY, formerly of Wayne, WV, preceded in Burial will follow at Yatesville Memorial Gardens, Louisa, KY. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
OVVIE JAMES ADKINS, 79, departed from this world on Thursday, August 20, 2009. He was death.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Armilda Bradshaw Adkins of Lavalette, W.Va., as well as one son, Joseph Stewart Adkins and his loving companion Vickie, of Clay, W.Va.; two daughters, Angela Perry of Proctorville, Ohio and Andrea Swanson of Huntington, W.Va. Also surviving are four siblings, Callie Adkins of Branchland, Odessa Adkins of Barboursville, W.Va., Robert Adkins also of Barboursville, W. Va., and Edley Adkins of Wayne, W.Va. He was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren, and the uncle of several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind one special sister-in-law, Ruby Nicely, whom he loved like a sister.
Ovvie was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean War, and a retiree from ACF Industries after many years of proud service. The family would like to extend special thanks to Hospice of Huntington for such great care, especially Claire Nudd.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, August 23, 2009 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Rev. Carlos Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bradshaw death, along with his son, David Smith, and his daughter, Caroline.
Smitty was a retired carpenter and of the Baptist faith. Additionally he proudly served in the US Army receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, the Philippine Liberation, and the World War II Victory Ribbons, and also fought in the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Susan Smith of Huntington, W.Va., Sherry Hickey and husband Matthew, and Taylor Allen Smith, all of Wayne; and one great grandson, Taylor Allen T.J. Smith II, of Wayne. Also surviving is three sisters, Faye Burns and husband Oscar of Huntington, Jeanie Adkins and husband Fred of East Lynn, W.Va., and Hester McSweeney and husband Floyd of Wayne; special longtime friend of 52 years, June R. Burks of Wayne; special friends Ruby Nicely, Tammy and Tommy Smith, Marcella Adkins, Brenda Allen, Chloe Javins, and Jessica Curnutte; and additional friends and neighbors, too numerous to mention.
Graveside services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Asbury death were her parents, Hughie and Emily Coredelia Price, along with six brothers, Leonard, Willie, Omar, Archie, Pearlie and Vernon; one sister, Gracie Rose; one great-granddaughter, Millie Thierry; one daughter-in-law, Nora Ellen Clark. She was also preceded in Cemetery. Mildred was a member of Tom's Creek United Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Jake Clark; seven children, Linda Melde and husband Rainhard, Lewis Clark, Rose Lee Perry and husband Herman, Peggy Thierry and husband Robert, Jerry Ray Clark, Katie Clark, and Derek Allen Clark; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 3 step-grandchildren; 11 step- great-grandchildren; two step- great- great-grandchildren; and one special former daughter-in-law, Ruby Brooks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington or Tom's Creek United Baptist Church.
EILEEN STEELE, 60, of East Lynn, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 24, 2009. death along with her mother-in-law, Carrie Epling Thomas. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Carl Ray Steele Sr.; two children, Carl Ray Steele Jr. and wife Tina of Barboursville, W.Va., and Carla Nelson and husband Kevin of Prichard, W.Va.; and one granddaughter, Kallie Alexes Steele of Barboursville, whom she loved so much. Additional survivors include one brother, John Webb of Ironton, Ohio; two nephews, also of Ohio, and special friends Jason Adams, Bob & Reda Baker, Jack Clay, Darrell Saunders, Pat Napier, all of East Lynn, Jewell Nelson of Prichard, and Bertha and Zula Lewis, of Wayne, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2009 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Pastors Mark Hatfield and A.J. Perry officiating. Burial will follow in the Epling death along with two sisters, Blanche Stephens Russell and Delores Adkins Webb; three brothers, Ralph Stephens, Gary Leonard Adkins, and Norman Archie Adkins; and one brother-in-law, Larry Ferguson.
Glen served the United States Navy in World War II. He was a retired auto reconditioner having worked for Gallagher Ford for 15 years and Dutch Miller for 28 years.
He leaves behind one son, Geoffrey Glen Adkins and his wife Deborah Sue Adkins of Wayne. Also surviving are two sisters, Joyce Roach and husband William of Richmond, Kentucky, and Sherma Ferguson of Columbus, Oh.; six brothers, Jay Adkins and wife Ethel of Wayne, Brainard Adkins and wife Malinda of Lavalette, W.Va., Gorman Adkins and wife Eve. Orville Adkins and wife Gail, all of Huntington, W.Va., Michael Adkins and wife Debbie of Chesapeake, Oh., and Seldon Adkins and wife Ruth Ann of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Brother Roger Maynard officiating. Burial will follow in Community Memorial Gardens with military honors performed by VFW Post 6103 and the American Legion Post 89 of Louisa. Another beautiful voice joined the heavenly choir when JOYCE DYER WHITED Burial followed in the Whited death. Lacy was a hard worker and loved her children more than anything. Additional survivors include her husband, Thomas; two daughters, Amy Pelfrey and Kasi Cleusman; three grandson, Drake, Justin, and Damian; four sisters, Rosie, Alice, Donna and Arlene; five brothers, Jessy, Timothy, Lafe, Marky, and Lawrence; and family and friends too numerous to mention.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Sunday at Cabwaylingo Presbyterian Church, Cabwaylingo, W.Va. Burial will follow in the Hall death along with one infant son, Leonard Nelson, Jr. Lucy was a member of Rush Branch Freewill Baptist Church .
Survivors include one son, Edward Nelson and wife Lisa of East Lynn, W.Va.; and two daughters, Deloris Smith and husband Rosco of Cove Gap, W.Va., and Linda Adams and husband Junior of Big Lynn. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 2 of which were considered "special add-ons"; 14 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren along with a host of friends and family too numerous to mention.
