Dr. John Moseley

President Emeritus of Austin College and lifelong leader in the Presbyterian Church, Dr. John Dean Moseley, 93, born on November 17, 1915, in Greenville, Texas, to Ernest and Lillie Alexander Moseley. He was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Jewel Moseley Rowe of Greenville, and Olive Moseley Mandrell of Austin.

Dr. Moseley graduated with a bachelor’s degree from East Texas State College in Commerce, a master’s and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked in government first at the national level, serving in the Office of Price Administration and later at the Bureau of the Budget in Washington, D.C.. Governor Alan Shivers brought Moseley back to Texas in 1950 to create the Legislative Research Council, where he served as director for three years.

In 1953, Dr. Moseley took the unexpected step of becoming President of Austin College in Sherman, Texas. For twenty-five years, he brought to this liberal arts college his unique problem-solving approach, questioning mind, creativity and willingness to take risks; he is credited with the institution’s growth in enrollment, campus facilities, innovative curricula, and reputation so that Austin College today is a recognized leader in higher education circles nationwide. After his retirement as President in 1978, Moseley continued his involvement with Austin College, serving as Chancellor and Director of the College’s Center for Program and Institutional Renewal. Dr. Moseley was instrumental in the forming of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (ICUT) and in securing legislation to create the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant. Dr. Moseley received several honorary doctorates and numerous local, state, and national awards for his leadership in higher education, the community, and the church.

Dr. Moseley was active in the Sherman community, serving as president of the Chamber of Commerce, chair of the United Fund of Sherman, director of Goals for Sherman and the Consortium for Community Education Development, Inc. He was a member and ordained elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church (formerly First Presbyterian Church) since coming to Sherman in 1953. When declining health prevented his attending church, he and his wife worshipped with Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church of Dallas on WRR 90.1.

Dr. Moseley met his wife, Sara Bernice Honea of Anson, Texas, when they were both members of the Presbyterian Youth Council in the 1930s. He is survived by his wife of 68 years; their three children: Sara Caroline Moseley of Dallas; John Dean Moseley, Jr., and Alice Butler of Irving; Rebecca Moseley Gafford and her husband, Ron, also of Dallas; four grandchildren: Peter Junkin and his wife, Michelle, of Edmond, Oklahoma; Andrew Junkin and wife Lynn, of Broomfield, Colorado; Dr. Jennifer Gafford of Denver Colorado; and David Gafford and wife Giselle of Dallas; and five great-grandchildren: Amira and Samuel Junkin of OKC, Nicholas and Isabel Junkin of Colorado, and Dean Gafford, of Dallas; and nieces and nephews.
