Thelma McPhail, Ft. Thomas hairdresser
For a quarter-century, Thelma McPhail cut, colored and styled hair in a salon she operated in her Ft. Thomas home.
"She liked the fact that she was at home, " said daughter Barbara Philippe of Ft. Thomas. "She could work in a business and still take care of her family."
Mrs. McPhail died Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights. She was 85 years old.
Mrs. McPhail was a native of Tompkinsville.
She owned and operated Thelma's Beauty Salon on Grand Avenue for about 25 years.
The customers came to her as much for her personality as her hairdressing skills.
"She was friendly and outgoing, " said Mrs. Philippe.
In the early 1970s, Mrs. McPhail retired from the beauty business and became an antiques dealer, buying and selling pieces for nearly 15 years.
After her husband, Harold McPhail, died in 1977, she moved to Palm Springs, Fla., to be near her son, Michael McPhail of Venice, Fla., and his family.
There, Mrs. McPhail "played bridge a lot and played golf, " said Mrs. Philippe.
Although Mrs. McPhail had not taken up golf until she was in her 50s and only began playing in earnest after moving to Florida, she became quite good at the sport.
"She had several holes in one. She had some trophies for that, " said Mrs. Philippe.
Mrs. McPhail returned to Kentucky several years ago.
