Lincoln school's Margaret Clare Erl, "taught everybody in the city of Dayton'
When a teacher works for more than 50 years in the only elementary school in town, she becomes a central figure in the lives of generation after generation of families.
That is why Margaret Clare Erl, 89, was one of the most beloved women in Dayton.
Ms. Erl died at 10:35 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Health Care Center in Covington.
She grew up in Dayton and received a master's degree in education at the University of Kentucky before returning to her hometown to teach. She worked at Lincoln Elementary School until she was 75.
"She basically taught everybody in the city of Dayton, " said a nephew, David Christen of Ft. Thomas. "She was probably the most loved teacher that ever taught there. She cared about all the kids."
She was a teacher until age 70. Then she worked for the next five years in the library until her retirement. She continued to volunteer at the school until she entered the nursing home.
A new gymnasium and performing arts wing at Lincoln Elementary was named after Ms. Erl in the early 1990s. At the dedication, she received a dozen roses from members of the Dayton Board of Education, several of whom she taught.
She commanded a level of respect among students that is not often seen anymore, said Jack Moreland, former Dayton superintendent of schools.
"She was truly a special lady, " Moreland said.
