Duty guided Woodrow W. Brown

Woodrow W. Brown of Ft. Mitchell was duty-oriented, whether it involved his 30-year career with Potter Shoe Co., his military service or his family.

Mr. Brown, 80, died Monday at Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati.

He retired as president of the former Potter Shoe Co. in Cincinnati. He also enjoyed golf and bridge and was a member of Ft. Mitchell Country Club and the Covington Optimist Club.

He was a member of Heritage League of Northern Kentucky and an Army veteran of World War II.

"He was truly an optimist, " said his son, Jack G. Brown of Terrace Park, Ohio. "That was part of his nature. He could see the positive side of things."

His first wife, Evelyn Brown, died in 1974. His second wife, Rebecca Best Brown, died in 1990.

Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Jane Domaschko of Edgewood; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with burial in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Dorothy Brown Brue, 88, of Latonia, died at 1:44 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired clerk with Devro Card Shop, Cincinnati, and a member of Latonia Christian Church. Her husband, George A. Brue, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorene Lyon of Covington; brothers, James Brown and Paul Brown, both of Ludlow; a sister, Pauline Schwartz of Ludlow; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the church Book of Rememberance, 3900 Decoursey Pike, Latonia 41015.

Louis Ecklar, 78, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at Clifton Villa Nursing Home, Cincinnati. He was a retired kiln setter with Charles Taylor and Son Co.

Survivors include daughters, Daisy Mae Cooper of Crittenden, Ella Lois Lawrence of Dry Ridge and Nancy Lorene Adams of Lexington; brothers, Chester Ecklar of Corinth and Delbert Ecklar of Minerva, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Corinth.

Lela Engle, 83, of Burlington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.

Ruby Blanding Dykes Garland, 92, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Centerville Methodist Church and United Methodist Ministry.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Beckman Garland Sr.; sons, Benny Garland of Vevay, Ind., and David Ray Garland of Lexington; daughters, Anita Mynear of Lexington and Bessie Rainey of Paris; a brother, Raymond Dykes of Paris; a sister, Jennie Whalen of Cynthiana; a half-sister, Tabitha Dykes of Cynthiana; 19 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Lexington. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mary Elizabeth Hoffman Hedges, 79, of Florence, died at 7:03 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. She was a former order clerk with Superior Jewelry and Novelty Co., and a member of Florence Baptist Church. Her husband, James Thompson Hedges, died in 1979.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Caldwell of Florence; a sister, Margaret Cave of Hebron; brothers, Billy Hoffman of Canton, Mich., and Woody Hoffman of Midland, Mich.; and one grandchild.

Services were today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial was in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

R. Sidney McNutt, 71, of Highland Heights, died Monday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired consultant with YMCA of USA and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Highland Heights. He was a member of Crescent Squares and Beechmont Squares, and a past president of Sertoma Club, Cincinnati. He was treasurer for Kentucky Kuzzins and a member of Avelon-Bellevue Lodge No. 657 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Violet Sensel McNutt; sons, David C. McNutt of Cincinnati and Robert S. McNutt Jr. of Oxford, Ohio; a daughter, Beverly M. Scott of Phoenix; a stepdaughter, Sharon L. Pavey of Highland Heights; a stepson, Robert C. Ewing of Japan; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Entombment will be in Evergreen Mausoleum, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Covington Scottish Rite Foundation, 1553 Madison Ave., Covington, 41014, or the church, 2916 Alexandria Pike, Highland Heights 41076.

Mary A. Sexton, 95, of Southgate, died Saturday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a founding member of St. Therese Church in 1927. She was also a member of the church Altar Society.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia A. Beck of Valley Center, Calif., and Colleen Lohstroh Ware of Cold Spring; and 23 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial was Monday. Burial was in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Carmel Manor or to St. Therese Church. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, handled arrangements.

James A. "Bud" Smith, 71, of Louisville, formerly of Burkesville, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ash Nursing Home in Cincinnati. He was a retired self-employed interior designer and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, J. Alexander Smith of Ft Thomas; a stepson, Brock Lehmann of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a daughter, Elsi Pelly of Smiths Grove; stepdaughters, Ann Kirk Lehmann of Ft. Thomas and Linda McCormick of Bay Village, Ohio; a brother, Charles Smith of Burkesville; sisters, Faye Morris and Elizabeth Brake, both of Louisville; one grandchild and four step-grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Burkesville Cemetery. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Anna Mae Sullivan, 87, of Falmouth, died Sunday at her daughter's home in Demossville. She was a homemaker and a member of Turner Ridge Baptist Church, Falmouth. Her husband, Wilbert E. Sullivan, died in 1977.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Stephens and Wilma Russell, both of Butler, Edith Priddy of Louisville and Marlena Brown of Demossville; sons, Ralph Sullivan of Latonia and Paul Sullivan of Butler; 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Turner Ridge Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Turner Ridge cemetery Fund. Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Irene H. Ware, 97, of Newport, died at 8:38 a.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a retired seamstress with the former Gidding-Jenny department store in Cincinnati.

Survivors include a cousin, Helen Schweitzer of Ft. Thomas.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Ft. Mitchell. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.
