Fred M. Potter, volunteer for Redwood rehab center

Five years ago, when Fred M. Potter became too ill to work, he had to choose how to live the rest of his days.

He didn't choose to travel, or stay at home. Instead, the retired Hamilton County golf course maintenance worker began volunteering at Redwood Rehabilitation Center in Ft. Mitchell, befriending severly disabled adults.

"He made life fun for them, " said his wife, Beverly Lutz Potter.

Mr. Potter, 58, of Ft. Thomas, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

Mrs. Potter explained that the center's policy stated gifts for the patients were supposed to be age-appropriate, even if an adult had the mental capacity of a young child.

Nevertheless, she said Mr. Potter brought his friends toys.

"My husband has always played with toys, and he has a collection of them.

He would say "This has got to be age-appropriate because I play with it, and I'm 58 years old, ' " she said.

In the last two years, Mr. Potter began videotaping Friday night dances at Redwood.

With a friend at TKR Cable, he edited the tapes and broadcast them on a public access channel.

Redwood residents watched themselves on television over and over, she said.

Mr. Potter's last concern was finding someone to take over for him at Friday's dance.

Mrs. Potter said a volunteer is welcome.

"He was never condescending.

He considered the residents the most special friends he ever had.

He's going to be missed an awful lot there."

Mr. Potter also was a member of Mother of God Church, Covington, and a volunteer with Cincinnati Museum Center.

He also was a member of the Army Reserves.

Other survivors include sons, Brian Potter of Cincinnati and Jeffrey Potter of Ft. Thomas; daughters, LaDonna Luckett and Juanita Graves, both of Cincinnati; brothers, Joseph Potter of Cincinnati and Henry Potter of Ft. Mitchell; sisters, Edith Sandusky of Dillsboro, Ind., and Christine Leach of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
