Bruce Liles, steelworker, directed choir, sang gospel
Bruce Liles, 96, a steelworker and church choir director who expressed his beliefs through original gospel songs, died at 1:40 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
Mr. Liles' song "I Want to See Jesus, Don't You?" was his first to be professionally recorded, when he was 78, said his daughter, Marian Pearson of Covington. But music had always been part of his life.
"He was from Appalachia, and he was raised in a singing family, " Mrs. Pearson said. His father had been a preacher who rode horseback from church to church.
Mr. Liles worked at Interlake Steel in Newport. He was choir director at Newport Church of the Nazarene. He sang in gospel quartets and encouraged his children to express their faith through music. His daughters play the organ and sing in church choirs.
One son, David, became a music professor and set his father's words to music. Another son, Buddy, became a professional gospel singer. As a member of the Florida Boys, he has recorded several of his father's songs, including "The Secret Place of Prayer."
"My father was a very positive man, " said Mrs. Pearson. "He always had a good word. One thing he'd always say is, "Don't worry about it.'
"He taught me that I could depend not only on him but on God to see me through the tough things and the hard decisions in life. He always had a strong faith."
He was a gardener and a longtime fox-hunter.
Other survivors include his wife, Florence Liles; sons, David Liles of Mansfield, Ohio, Buddy Liles of Pensacola, Fla., and Tom Liles of Cincinnati; another daughter, Anita Williams of Sarasota, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home, with visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Nadine Russell Coates, 81, of Sparta, died Friday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a retired bookkeeper with Varbles Grocery in Sparta. Her husband, William Byron Coates, died in 1983.
Survivors include a cousin, Emma L. Craig, and a second cousin, Neal O'Connor, both of Sparta.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Harry A. Harms, 84, of Hebron, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice, Covington. He was a retired carpenter and farmer, a member of Tri-City YMCA, Florence and a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II. His wife, Dorothy Dobbs Harms, died in 1979.
Survivors include a stepson, Paul E. Hayes of Ludlow; sisters, Ruby Becht of New York, Lucille Baker of Illinois and Barbara Perry of Florence; and brothers, Richard Harms of Hebron and Robert Harms of Villa Hills.
Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Bullittsburg Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials are suggested to Tri-City YMCA, 212 Main St., Florence 41042.
James William Kraus, 77, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a punch press operator for 40 years with F. H. Lawson Co. in Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. Kraus; sons, Kevin Kraus of Newport, James Kraus Jr. and Howard Lee Kraus of Covington and Bruce Kraus stepsons, Ralph Huelsman of Erlanger and Harry Huelsman Jr. of Covington; daughters, Louise Weed of Edgewood, Jackie Kraus of Covington and Carol Ann Kraus; a brother, Jack Kraus of Bellevue; a sister, LaVerne Grillho of the state of California; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Ft. Mitchell, with visitation at 9 a.m. Monday. Entombment will be in Highland cemetery Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Red Cross, 7723 Mall Road, Florence 41042. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Mary C. Moeller, 64, of Elsmere, died at 5:13 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker; a volunteer in the cafeteria of St. Henry High School, Elsmere; a member of the Parent Teacher Association at John W. Miles Elementary School in Erlanger; and a volunteer with children's charities.
Survivors include her husband, Robert A. Moeller; daughters, Kathleen M. Turner and Lora Marie Kerns, both of Elsmere, and Cynthia A. Ramsey of Stamping Ground; a brother, Jacob Ogburn of Covington; and nine grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere, with visitation 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church or to charities benefiting children or American veterans.
John B. Sullivan Sr., 52, of Glencoe, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a former supervisor with Natico, Florence. He was a member of Glencoe volunteer fire department, a deacon and Sunday school director at Ten Mile Baptist Church, Napoleon, an avid checkers player and a volunteer youth baseball coach.
Survivors include his wife, Clarissa Skirvin Sullivan; sons, John Sullivan Jr., Clarence David Sullivan, Thomas Michael Sullivan and Joseph Wayne Sullivan of Glencoe; sisters, Mary Frances Olding of Indianapolis and Lula Arrasmith of Warsaw; brothers, Clarence Sullivan and Julie Sullivan of Glencoe, Donald Gene Sullivan of Owenton, Pat Sullivan of Warsaw and Richard "Dickie" Sullivan of Abilene, Texas; two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, with visitation 5 to 9 tonight at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Dorothy Torline, 75, of Morning View, died at 7 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a former school crossing guard for Covington public schools. She was a member of Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 203, Latonia, and former president of the Grandmothers Club of Kenton County.
Her husband, Robert Torline, died in 1989.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Mardis of Morning View and Linda Mardis of Independence; and four grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of services at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Randall Robert Watters, 35, of Covington, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a disabled general laborer.
Survivors include his wife, Penny Watters; a son, Adrian R. Watters of Covington; daughters, Tabitha Lynn Watters, Nicole Ann Seiber and Maranda Morgan of Covington; and brothers, Jonathan Watters, Larry Watters and Steve Watters of Latonia, Timothy Watters of Sevierville, Tenn., and Chris Watters of Covington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
