Mary Zaffiro had boundless love
On nights when Mary El Dunn Zaffiro struggled with illness, her husband Frank L. Zaffiro had to step gingerly around his Villa Hills home.
That's because as many as 20 of Mrs. Zaffiro's children and grandchildren would be asleep on couches and in sleeping bags throughout the home sharing time caring for the woman who had taken such good care of them.
"She was just completely selfless. She was always thinking of others - what she could do to make each one (of her family members) happy, " said a daughter, Patricia Zerhusen Meirose of Ft. Mitchell. "She raised the six of us (children) mostly by herself. She just did a tremendous job. She overcame a lot of obstacles."
Mrs. Zaffiro, 73, of Villa Hills, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday at her home. She was a former doctors' office manager for three local doctors.
Mrs. Zaffiro was born in Newport and spent her life in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. She met her husband at a broom dance in the 1970s.
"We sort of looked after each other. I enjoyed her company very much, and I'll miss her very much, " said Mr. Zaffiro, who said he'll remember his wife, whom he married
22 years ago, for her boundless affection for her loved ones.
"She had such a big heart that she had enough love for all her kids and grandchildren and a new husband besides, " he said.
"Even with so many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she gave each one a lot of individual attention, " Mrs. Meirose added.
