Ernest Hollows, taught literature in colleges
Ernest W. Hollows of Independence loved young people and literature, and charted a career path that allowed him to indulge both passions.
Mr. Hollows was a teacher and administrator at four institutions of higher learning - the last being Northern Kentucky University.
"He enjoyed working with young people, " said Dorothy I. Hollows, his wife of 53 years.
Mr. Hollows also helped prepare inner-city teens for the job market at the Citizens Committee on Youth in Cincinnati.
Mr. Hollows died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. He was 76.
He was a native of Methuen, Mass., and an Army veteran of World War II.
He earned a bachelor's degree in English at Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and a master's degree in English literature at Boston University.
He was an English instructor at the College of William and Mary in Norfolk, Va. He taught English and was assistant dean and then associate dean of students and admissions at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
He was associate director for experiential education at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, before going to the Citizens Committee on Youth. He was director of the career center and intake and assessment services for the organization, which is supported with city and federal funds.
After Mr. Hollows retired in 1986, he taught English composition classes at NKU from 1990 to 1992.
"He was very outgoing, good-natured and friendly, " Mrs. Hollows said. "He had a great sense of humor."
Mrs. Hollows said her husband enjoyed reading.
"He was a family man, " she said. "His hobby was his family."
Besides Mrs. Hollows, survivors include a daughter, Judith Gilbert of Park Hills; a son, William H. Hollows of New Bern, N.C.; sisters, Marilyn Haskell of Auburn, Mass., and Janet Parks of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Frank R. Hollows of Brookfield, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Daisy Dealey, 87, of Newport, died Thursday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. She was a retired laborer with Hyde Park Clothes, Cincinnati, and a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Newport. Her husband, James Dealey, died in 1959.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Bley of Edna, Texas; a brother, Roy Keaton of Fairhaven, Ohio; and half-sisters, Cora Smith of Hamilton, Ohio, and Ruby Thomspon of New Carlisle, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Brookville, Ind. Memorials are suggested to the church, Fifth Street and Park Avenue, Newport 41071.
Kenneth "Skin" Ferrell, 89, of Dry Ridge, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a farmer and an employee of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. He was a charter member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Dry Ridge.
Survivors include his wife, Dorotha Works Ferrell of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Brenda Points of Dry Ridge; sisters, Gwynn Baldwin of Lakeside Park and Fredricka Bingham of Dry Ridge; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Melvin E. Goes, 84, of Crescent Springs, died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a retired electrical contractor and a member of Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Forncrook Goes; daughters, Lana Krochmal of Skillman, N.J., and Melanie Schlaf of Edgewood; a sister, Elda Bates of Milwaukee; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Monday. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Elda Gail Davis Hall, 68, of Covington, died at 2:28 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include sons, Steven Bruin and Barry Hall, both of Covington; daughters, Belinda Anderson of Latonia, Stacey Mehler of Lebanon, Pa., and Pamela Robertson of Ft. Wright; a brother, Larry Davis of Jeffersonville, Ind; sisters, Gladys Hardyman of Cincinnati and Marilyn Wheeler of Erlanger; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, and from 10 a.m. Monday until time of services at the church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Betty J. Kampsen, 58, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a former secretary in the accounting office of Robert Hofacre in Ft. Wright. Her husband, Thomas J. Kampsen, died in 1986.
Survivors include daughters, Lisa Phelps of Erlanger, Gina Leek of Burlington and Jennifer Grant of Ludlow; sons, Tom Kampsen of Crescent Springs and Mike Kampsen of Burlington; a brother, Jack Ryan of Ft. Mitchell; and 10 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Eleanor B. Kreidler, 72, of Covington, died at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Gallatin County Health Care Center. She was a retired clerk with the Kenton County tax assessment office and a member of Irish Rovers of St. Patrick Senior Citizens, Independence.
Survivors include her husband, William A. Kreidler.

Marie A. Miller Maxwell, 96, of Ft. Wright, died Thursday at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John T. Maxwell, died in 1935. A son, Jack Maxwell, died in 1987.
Survivors include a son, William Maxwell of Cincinnati; daughters, Kathleen Gormley of Ft. Wright and Patricia Bender of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.
Bessie May McGuire, 83, of Florence, died at 8:43 a.m. Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Hopeful Lutheran Church, Florence. She was a member of White Shrine of Jerusalem Chapter No. 10, Covington. Her husband, Lester E. McGuire, died in 1974. A son, Thomas E. McGuire, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Gene McGuire of Florence; brothers, Thomas Barr and Howard Barr, both of Vandergrift, Pa.; sisters, Helen Ashenbaugh and Martha Edine, both of Vandergrift, Pa.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Curran-Shaeffer Funeral Home in Apollo, Pa. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, and 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at Curran-Shaeffer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery in Apollo.
Lauretta C. Goetz Recker, 96, of Cincinnati, formerly of Bellevue, died at 5:15 a.m. Friday at Manor Care Nursing Home in Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Church, Bellevue. Her husband, Lloyd E. Recker, died in 1967.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Ann Albert of Cincinnati and Loyola Schulte of Erlanger; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
Donald Washington, 68, of Maysville, died at 5:10 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Maysville.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Burns Washington; a daughter, Vicki Henry of Maysville; sons, Ronnie Washington of Bracken County, John Washington, Wayne Washington, Eddie Washington and Keith Washington, all of Maysville; stepsons, David Perry, Charles Perry and Bill Perry, all of Louisville, and Robert Perry of Maysville; 25 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, is handling arrangements.
Larry Wayman, 60, of Independence, was found dead Friday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
