Alma Shupe, teacher and Girl Scout leader
Alma Dean Hudnall Shupe of Florence was a dedicated teacher, helped the victims of hurricanes, served as a Girl Scout troop leader and gave tours at Dinsmore Homestead.
Mrs. Shupe, 63, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday at her home.
She taught about clothing and textiles at the University of Cincinnati before marrying her husband, Dr. Dean Stanley Shupe, and rearing two daughters, Lillian Shupe and Dr. Ellen Irene Shupe, both of Union. Mrs. Shupe previously taught high school in Carlisle.
Many remember Mrs. Shupe for her devotion to children. In the early 1970s, she started a kindergarten in her home. She later was a substitute teacher and Girl Scout leader at St. Paul Elementary.
For more than 20 years, she was a pillar of Union Presbyterian Church. She was an elder, a deacon and Sunday School teacher at the church, also serving as a choir member and a member of the church Mission and Education Committee. She built a Habitat for Humanity house as part of a church work team at Sumter, S.C., after Hurricane Hugo. She also helped clean up in south Miami after Hurricane Andrew.
She was instrumental in starting Boone County Churches for Community Service in the early 1970s.
She was a co-owner of a catering company and a volunteer with Women's Crisis Centers, Parish Kitchen and Dinsmore Homestead Foundation. She was a Girl Scout leader with Licking Valley Girl Scouts, serving on the council's board of directors.
Other survivors include sisters, Mildred Louise Hickman of Morehead, Bettye Ellen Martenson of Annandale, Va., Nancye Ruth Thornberry of Lakeland, Fla., and Drusie Ann Miller of Union; and brothers, Lloyd Calvin Hudnall of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Virgil Ray Hudnall of Indianapolis.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Paris Cemetery.

Norman M. Bush, 87, of Mt. Washington, Ohio, died Monday at Mercy-Anderson Hospital in Anderson Township, Ohio. He owned a portrait studio in the former Shillito's Department Store in downtown Cincinnati and was a member of Mt. Washington Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen E. Grant Bush, formerly of Boone County; stepdaughters, Sandra Howes of Marquette, Mich., and Ella Jean Vetter of Naples, Fla.; and one stepgrandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at T. P. White and Sons Funeral Home, Mt. Washington. Visitation will be there from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the church, 2021 Sutton Ave., Mt. Washington, OH 45230.
Russell A. Class Jr., 54, of Alexandria, died at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He was a salesman with Pferrman Floor Covering Co., Cold Spring; an original member of Campbell County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and a member of Kentucky League of Sportsmen.
Survivors include sons, Richard Class of Alexandria, Jarrod Class of Tucson, Ariz., and Donald Moore of Burlington; a daughter, Becky Class of Morrisdale, Pa.; his father, Russell A. Class Sr. of Burlington; a sister, Regina Watson of Florence; and 11 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Jenny Cummins, 62, of Burlington, died at 10:02 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Myrtle Ada Irwin Jansen, 91, of Ft. Thomas, died at 11:15 a.m. Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Madison Avenue Christian Church, Covington.
She was a former member and Sunday School teacher at First Christian Church of Ft. Thomas, where she was a member of the church Christian Women's Fellowship. She also was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 269, Ft. Thomas, the Baker Hunt Club in Covington and Covington Women's Art Club.
Survivors include sons, Donald J. Jansen of Pensacola, Fla., and Gerald Jansen of Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Marian J. Smith of Ft. Thomas; a sister, Vera Bradley of Newport; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Madison Avenue Christian Church. Visitation will be from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Thurs day at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Lillian C. Kern, 77, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington. Her husband, Victor H. Kern, died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Steve Kern of Burlington; daughters, Annette Brady of Dry Ridge, Patricia Crisler of Covington and Barbara Gall of Independence; a sister, Evelyn Perry of Dry Ridge; a brother, Jerry Meyer of Ft. Wright; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Adele "Dell" Oelsner, 90, of Villa Hills, died at 1:15 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a former owner of Oelsner's Colonial Tavern, Ft. Wright, and a retired manager of Hospitality House of Bethesda Oak Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a member of Benedictine Guild. Her husband, Russell Oelsner, died in 1988.
Survivors include a sister, Natalie Riedinger of Latonia.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ma donna Manor Chapel, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. James F. Rouse, 58, of Florence, died at 3:49 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a truck driver with Roadway Express and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church, Teamsters Local No. 100, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. His son, James N. Rouse, died in 1988.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Hopperton Rouse; sisters, Linda Struve of McClean, Va., and Mary Ann Cook of Erlanger; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright 41011.
Garnet R. Slater, 67, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at her home. She was a retired factory worker with Miller Shoe, Cincinnati, and Dr. Scholl's in Falmouth. Her husband, Chester Slater, died in 1955.
Survivors include sons, Jeff Emminger and Terry Slater, both of Falmouth; a daughter, Janet Hatton of Falmouth; a brother, Lucious Tackett of Falmouth; a sister, Gladys Hillgrove of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Mildred Ann Taylor, 52, of Boyd, died Tuesday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Berry.
Mabel Conrad Walden, 85, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
