Ft. Wright's Lawrence H. Whelan, inspired kids as track coach, mentor
Lawrence H. Whelan, the retired owner of Larry's Engine Service in Cincinnati, balanced a strong work ethic with a keen sense of humor.
As a result, dozens of children became inspired by the track coach, World War II Army veteran and American Legion member.
"He was a work-hard, play-hard kind of guy, " said a son, Michael Whelan of Villa Hills.

Mr. Whelan encouraged Post sports writer Terry Boehmker, who attended school with one of Mr. Whelan's children, to enter journalism after Mr. Whelan read one of Mr. Boehmker's school articles.
"He always encouraged young people to achieve their dreams, " Michael Whelan said.
Mr. Whelan owned his business for about 40 years. Another son, James Whelan of Union, now operates the garage.
