Richard Owens, helped launch building firm
As children, Richard Owens and his brothers used to scrounge for lumps of coal along the railroad tracks to heat their home.
But they promised themselves that a better life lay ahead and Pete, Leroy and Richard later formed their own home-building firm in Erlanger: Owens Brothers Builders.
Today, many of their brick houses and office buildings can be found in Northern Kentucky, particularly in the Erlanger and Florence areas.
"He was a pillar of strength, " said Mr. Owens' youngest daughter, Dotty Pyle of Burlington. "He was mischievous and funny, yet strong and fearless. Dad was a good father. He ruled with strength and a loud voice."
Richard Owens, 84, of Elsmere, died at 11:03 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood. He was a member of St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Mr. Owens worked for a railroad and an aeronautical firm in Cincinnati before he and his brothers went into business together.
"He just worked real hard all of his life, " Mrs. Pyle said. "He and his brothers trapped furs when they were younger to buy groceries.
It was a hard life but an interesting life."
Mr. Owens was a strong Catholic who didn't fear death, his daughter said.
"This parting is just temporary for all of us, " Mrs. Pyle said. "We know we will have him again."
Other survivors include his wife, Edith L. Baxter Owens; a son, Richard W. Owens of Burlington; daughters, Alma D. Byrd of Crittenden, Betty Jo Noble of Murray and Pat Emerson of Walton;14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Earl Elgin Brown, 86, of California, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired welder with Littleford Brothers, Cincinnati, and a member of World Wide Church of God, Edgewood, and Senior Citizens Happy 100 Club.
Survivors include his wife, Emily Brown; daughters, Mary Jo Perkins of Alexandria, Judy Weisner of Akron, Ohio, and Barbara Rawe of California; sisters, Eleanore Evans of Dayton and Florence Norton of Southgate; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Persimmon Grove Cemetery, Campbell County. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042. Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.
Oliver Day Corey, 87, of Cincinnati, died at 7 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ash Nursing Home in Cincinnati.
He was a truck driver and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Lilly Allison Nichols Corey, died in 1976.
Survivors include a daughter, Mae Marie Rosenbalm of Lebanon, Ohio; a son, John S. Corey of Alabama; 24 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Syble M. Figgins, 74, Covington, died Monday at her home.

Gail Hopkins, 58, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Dayton, died Saturday at Orlando Regional Medical Center.
She was a homemaker and a member of Pine Castle United Methodist Church in Orlando.
Survivors include her husband, Jack H. Hopkins; a daughter, Holly L. Cook of Cincinnati; a son, Michael J. Hopkins of Orlando; and a brother, John L. Dodd of Dayton.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Orlando, is handling arrangements.
Charles Howe, 73, of Covington, died at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at his home.

LaVern Robinson Orme, 58, of Crittenden, died Tuesday at her home.

Talton L. Pearcy Jr., 78, of Covington, died at 8:50 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
He was a retired inventory control analyst for Cincinnati Milacron, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia.
He also was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Donald Pearcy of Atlanta and Gregory Pearcy of Erlanger; a daughter, Susan Eddy of Covington; brothers, Eugene Pearcy of Troy, Ohio, and Charles Pearcy of Smyrna, Ga.; a sister, Mildred Bradley of Middlesboro; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Elvera Mary Schulte, 77, of Ft. Wright, died at 11 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired employee of WCPO-TV, Channel 9, Cincinnati, and a member of Siena Club, Ft. Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel, Covington.
Visitation will be there from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Alma M. Taylor, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind.
She was a homemaker and a member of Carrollton Wesleyan Church. Her husband, Howard R. Taylor Sr., died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Howard "Bobby" Taylor Jr. of Carrollton; sisters, Velma Acree of Carrollton and Mary Shepherd of Owensboro; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
