Augusta's Bill Austin: artist, photographer and good friend
Bill Austin liked a good time with good friends, and the Kelsch family in Bracken County fit that role.
"He was just like a member of the family. Every holiday he was here, having a good time and dressing up like Santa Claus at Christmas, " said Mary Helen Kelsch.
"Our kids just thought of him as an uncle, " she added.
Mr. Austin, 76, of Augusta, died Saturday in Columbia Hospital, Maysville.
He was a retired graphic artist with the Hennegan Co., Florence, and worked at various times as a professional photographer. "He took a lot of nice pictures for calendars and things, " said Mrs. Kelsch.
Mr. Austin was a good friend to her late hus band, George Kelsch, especially during the time he was ill, Mrs. Kelsch said. "He would work in the greenhouse with George, and would take him for chemotherapy, " she said.
A native of the Falmouth area, Mr. Austin was a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He leaves a daughter, Sharon Austin of Cincinnati; sons, Michael Austin and James Austin, both of Stamping Ground, Mark Austin and Joe Austin, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Irma Cline of Augusta, and Katherine Wright of Falmouth.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Augusta.

Neoma J. Bartels, 72, of Ft. Thomas, died at 5:34 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a clerk with Westinghouse Electric Co., Philadelphia.
Survivors include her husband, Ferdinand J. Bartels; daughters, Nancy Hudson of Bellevue and Jennifer Uehlein of Ft. Thomas; a son, Michael D. Bartels of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Genn Rose Frye, 69, of Maysville, died at 6:31 p.m. Saturday at Columbia Hospital in Maysville. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Willard Frye, died in 1978.
Survivors include a sister, Charlene Malone of Aberdeen, Ohio; and a brother, Pete Wills of Dry Ridge.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Mason County.
Beatrice Mae Schulte Gramke, 76, of Cincinnati, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Gramke Jr.; daughters, Diane Nye of Newport and Marlene Gramke of Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Catholic Residential Services for Connley Home, 100 E. Eighth St., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45202. Frederick Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.
Pauline R. Hartke, 79, of Florence, died at 7:50 p.m. Friday at Florence Park Nursing Home in Florence. She was a former owner of Hartke Auto Body and a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger. Her husband, Lee Arnold Hartke, died in 1983. A son, James Hartke, died in 1990.
Survivors include sons, Wayne Hartke of Florence, Lee Hartke Jr. of Edgewood and Paul Hartke of Union; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Walter Dolan Hewitt, 77, of Independence, died at 9:25 p.m. Friday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a former welder with Rex Nord Chainbelt in Madison, Ind., and a member of World Wide Church of God, Ft. Wright. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn P. Hewitt; a daughter, Janie Johnson of Worthville; sons, Steven B. Hewitt of Bedford and Mark J. Hewitt of Hooks, Texas; stepdaughters, Janet Warner of Latonia, Treela Thompson of Warsaw and Karen Griffin of Falmouth; a stepson, Shanon Tackett of Independence; sisters, Elva Harlow of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Viola "Polly" Wilson of Worthville; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.
George H. LaChance Sr., 60, of Williamstown, died Saturday at his home of cancer. He was a self-employed plumber and a member of Williamstown Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Skirvin LaChance; sons, George LaChance Jr. of Cincinnati and Steve LaChance of San Diego; a stepson, Toby Early of Williamstown; daughters, Vicky Nichols of Montana, Wendy Nichols of Las Vegas and Sandra Burnett of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; his mother, Edith B. McNese of Bolder City, Nev.; brothers, Clarence "Chuck" Breen of Georgetown and Joseph LaChance of New Jersey; a sister, Blanche Dessormeau of Colchester, Vt.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky., 41014.
Harold Nitschke, 59, of Florence, died Sunday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Garfield Siler, 68, of Hebron, died at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired truck loader with National Service Corp. and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Ima Jean Brock Siler; sons, Larry D. Siler of Warsaw and Michael R. Siler of Ludlow; a brother, Estill Siler of Crabtree Orchard; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Hebron.
