Camilla "Sis' Townsend, faithful provider for family

Camilla "Sis" Townsend was known as a hard worker.

"She was very faithful. She did her job, although crippled some by arthritis, " said Grace Hall, Mrs. Townsend's supervisor in the Erlanger-Elsmere Schools' kitchen and cafeteria.

"She went to work every day, " added Mrs. Townsend's daughter-in-law, Dana Townsend.

Mrs. Townsend, 81, of Erlanger, died Friday morning in Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a retired cafeteria cook with Erlanger-Elsmere Schools.

"I remember her working there as long ago as 1972. She was a very active booster of our schools, " said Erlanger-Elsmere Superintendent Jim Molloy.

Mrs. Townsend worked in the cafeteria at Erlanger Elementary School for a number of years, and later in the school system's central kitchen at Lloyd High School, Mrs. Hall recalled.

Mrs. Townsend also liked to cook for her family. "She was an excellent cook. She loved to take care of her family, and to cook big meals and have everybody over, " said her daughter-in-law.

As a young widow, Mrs. Townsend sometimes worked at three or four jobs to support her young children, the younger Mrs. Townsend said.

"She was a worker, " said Mrs. Townsend's son, Randy, of Erlanger.

Her mother-in-law was also popular with her neighbors, said Dana Townsend. "She had a lot of friends. They loved her very dearly."

Mrs. Townsend's husband, Richard Townsend, died in 1964. Sons Ronnie Townsend and Rick Townsend died in 1976 and 1995, respectively.

In addition to her son, survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Rucker of Cincinnati; sisters, Nancy Huser and Margaret Bockelman, both of Erlanger, May Jo Heeb and Jeanne Hoersting, both of Lakeside Park, and Shirley Pitts of Crestview Hills; brothers, Jim Sahnger of Atlanta and Jack Sahnger of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Mrs. Townsend donated her body to University of Cincinnati Medical College. Memorials are suggested to St. Henry Church, 3813 Dixie Highway, Elsmere 41018. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Julius "Cabbage' Lonaker Jr., ran Falmouth restaurant, owned pool hall

About everybody who shot a game of pool or grabbed a quick bite of food in Falmouth knew Julius "Cabbage" Lonaker Jr.

Mr. Lonaker, 86, of Falmouth, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

He was a restaurateur and a retired employee of Fisher's Restaurant, Falmouth.

Mr. Lonaker cooked at Fisher's when it was part of a complex which also included a motel. In later years he was night clerk at the motel, said his son, Glendon Lonaker of Falmouth.

Mr. Lonaker also operated the Falmouth Chili Parlor in the downtown area for a number of years, his son said, and he was the proprietor of the billiard hall.

People around Falmouth always knew Mr. Lonaker as "Cabbage, " a nickname dating back to his youth, his son said. "As I understand it, he and some friends were around a filling station when a truckload of cabbage came in. They made a bet on who could eat the most raw cab bage, and my father won, " said Glendon Lonaker.

His father liked fishing, swimming and gardening, the younger Lonaker said. "He liked to fish, but he really loved swimming in both forks of the Licking River. He fished on a trot line and I can remember as a small child him having some big catfish in a tub. He also loved to grow things in his garden, " said Mr. Lonaker's son.

Mr. Lonaker was a member of Falmouth United Methodist Church.

Other survivors include his wife, Goldie Hopper Lonaker; son, Roger Lonaker, also of Falmouth; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to the church, Shelby Street, Falmouth 41040.

Vernie Amos, 83, of Elsmere, died at 3:30 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Elsmere. She was a member of the church Missionary Society, and a past president of Senior Citizens Golden Age Club, Elsmere.

Survivors include sons, Robert Samuels of Elsmere, Billy Ray Samuels and Harold Lloyd Samuels, both of Indianapolis.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes Temple AME Church, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Ila Beckham, 84, of Carrollton, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Owenton. Her husband, Ben Thomas "Hawk" Beckham, died in 1990.

Survivors include a son, Jake Beckham of Cincinnati; daughters, Sylvia Manley and Rita Crawford, both of Sanders, and Linda Humbel of Carrollton; brothers, Edgar Boone of Brooksburg, Ind., Robert Thomas Boone of Vevay, Ind., Austin "Red" Boone and L. C. Boone, both of Rising Sun, Ind.; sisters, Eunice Wright of Owenton, Ola B. Heath of Brooksburg, Ind., Arizona Jeffries and Mary Green, both of Madison, Ind.; nine Grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton.

George E. Bentley, 83, of Ft. Thomas, died at 1:06 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. He was a retired clerk with Railway Express.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Bentley; a son, George L. Bentley of Ft. Thomas; daughters, Grace Winters of Highland Heights, Mary Leurck, Rose Richter and Beverly Helphinstine, all of Ft. Thomas; 14 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements.

Verona Mabel Merrill Bradford, 91, of Foster, died Sunday at Edgemont Manor Nursing Home in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a member of Forest Hill Baptist Church. Her husband, Philip Bradford, died in 1979.

Survivors include a sister, Viola Merrill Gaskins of Southgate.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Johnsville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Nancy Jane Brown, 72, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Michael Brown of Glencoe; a sister, Patricia Hunt of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Mack Walker of Lake Wylie, S.C.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington 41014. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Jamie Nathaniel Campagna II, was stillborn Saturday at Tri-County Hospital in LaGrange.

Survivors include his parents, Jamie Nathaniel Campagna and Mae Lavon Williams, both of Carrollton; and grandparents, Jennie and Tom Long of Carrollton, Kenneth and Nancy Williams of Turners Station, Donn and Doris Campagna of Bardstown, and Sam and Michele Conrad of Trimble County.

Graveside services were this morning at IOOF Cemetery, Car rollton. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is handling arrangements.

Loretta Carter, 81, of West Chester, Ohio, formerly of La tonia, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday at her home. She was a retired employee of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia, and R. L. Polk Co., Cincinnati. She was a member of Tri-County Baptist Church, West Chester. Her hus band, Cecil Harold Carter, died in 1990. A daughter, Pamela Sue Carter, died in 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Joy Carter of West Chester.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church Missionary Fund, 8195 Beckett Road, West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Jerry Cox, 55, of Dayton, died Sunday at his home. Arrangements are pending at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.

Willie R. Gaines, 83, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Friday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a retired construction worker and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Jaunona Johnson of Covington, and a brother, General Lee Gaines of Thompson, Ga.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere.

Lafell Hinton, 75, of Florence, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Virginia Rose Lankheit, 62, of Independence, died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired sales clerk with McAlpin's Department Store, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence H. Lankheit; a son, Rick L. Lankheit of Edgewood; daughters, Connie S. Stewart of Covington, Debbie A. Brueggen of Independence and Pam M. Hardy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; brothers, Wilbur Wolfzorn and Vernon Wolfzorn, both of Cold Spring; sisters, Thelma Herman, Betty Roach and Mildred Ball, all of Newport; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.

Donald Losey, 83, of New port, died at 4:10 p.m. Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport. He was a Newport attorney and a member of the Kentucky and American bar associations.

Survivors include his wife, Ella Patton Losey; sons, Donald Losey Jr. of Newport, Franklin Losey of Highland Heights and Earl Losey of Vienna, Va.; a brother, Gerald Losey of Silver Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tues day at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Edith Meredith, 72, of Covington, died Sunday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Mary E. Nichting, 60, of Covington, died at 7 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a former Red Cross volunteer. She was a volunteer with McKinley Elementary School, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her hus band, Steven Nichting Sr.; sons, Steven Nichting Jr. and Timothy Nichting, both of Covington, and Donald Nichting of Orlando; a daughter, Laura Mae Maklem of Williamsburg, Ohio; a brother, Russell Abney of Withamsville, Ohio; sisters, Betty Reffit of Cincinnati, Jorene White, Martha O'Connell and Debbie Slayback, all of Madisonville, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill.

Ona Mae Okvit, 79, of Campbell County, died Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Gerald Parker, 62, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Thomas Russell, 54, of Newport, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. He was a Newport City worker. Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church, Newport. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery.

Robert C. Smith, 74, of Covington, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. He was an engineer and owner of Automation Unlimited, Florence. He was a member of Miami Valley VFW Post No. 3809, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a son, Robert C. Smith Jr. of Bonham, Texas; daughters, Karen E. Smith and Kathiline Ann Smith, both of New York; and one grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dayton Memorial cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati 45242. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Francis Red Van Arsdall, 68, of Burlington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired carpenter with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Sand Run Baptist Church, Hebron.

He was a member of Association of Research and Enlightenment and Hebron Masonic Lodge. He was a member of United Auto Workers and American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include his wife, Bertie Roden Van Arsdall; sons, John A. Van Arsdall and Mark E. Van Arsdall, both of Cincinnati and Adam Francis Van Arsdall of Ludlow; daughters, E. Ann Cress of Hebron and Tracy Van Arsdall of Florence; brothers, George Van Arsdall of Demossville, Thomas Van Arsdall of Crescent Park and Stanley Van Arsdall of Verona; a sister, Flora Shepperd of Latonia Lakes; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, and from 11 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Demossville.

Memorials are suggested to the cemetery fund, Route 1, Demossville 41033.
