Ft. Thomas' Dr. John W. Grover, donated skills
Dr. John W. Grover, family physician and outdoorsman who climbed to the base camp on Mt. Everest and helped chart the depths of Mammoth Cave, died Monday at his home in Ft. Thomas at age 74.
Dr. Grover had a family practice in Ft. Thomas for more than 40 years.
During that time he expanded his hours to accommodate a hefty schedule of volunteer work.
He and his partner, Dr. Carl Anderson, provided medical care for Holly Hill Children's Home for more than three decades.
When Dr. Grover's son started playing football for Highlands High School, Dr. Grover became team physician. His son graduated, but Dr. Grover stayed on as the official team physician for 22 years.
"Every football season, he was out there with the team, " said his wife, Joan Wagstaff Grover.
In the 1960s and 1970s, he helped staff the free clinic on Vine Street near the University of Cincinnati.
"He was the kindest, most gentle man there ever was, " Mrs. Grover said.
"He was unassuming but he was outgoing at the same time. He loved working with the kids, the teen-agers.
"He was very non-judgmental, " she said.
"He made people feel comfortable. He was their friend."
Dr. Grover was a Navy doctor who served aboard a ship during the Korean War. When their children were young, Dr. Grover would lead the family on camping trips. In the mid-1960s, a friend introduced Dr. Grover to spelunking - cave exploring.
He became active with the Cave Research Foundation and spent eight years helping to map and survey unexplored regions of Mammoth Cave. He became director of safety for the project, his wife said.
In 1974 he and several other mountaineers climbed to the base camp on Mt. Everest.
Dr. Grover was on the boards of St. Luke Hospital and the Ft. Thomas YMCA. He was a member of Phi Rho Sigma Medical Fraternity and a member of Ft. Thomas Lodge No. 808 F&AM, Scottish Rite in Covington, and Syrian Temple Shrine in Cincinnati.
