George F. Cook, 93, farmer
The last of 12 children in the Cook family, George Frank Cook, died Friday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown. He was 93.
A retired tobacco farmer who grew up near New Columbus in Owen County, Mr. Cook worked on his family's 49-acre farm from when he was a young boy until he retired at 67.
"He loved it. He loved being outside, " said his daughter, Mary Susan Tomlin of Owenton.
Mr. Cook cleared the land for the lake in Elk Lake Shores, a private community in Owen County. At the University of Kentucky Experimental Farm in Eden Shale in Owen County, where he worked for about five years, Mr. Cook planted apple trees and did other general farm labor.
"He was so honest and so sincere, a good worker, " farm manager O.D. Hawkins said. "He had a very pleasing personality and a great Christian attitude toward everything and everybody."
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Cook served 13 months before he received a disability discharge at 38. He was stationed at Ft. Thomas; at Breckenridge in Western Kentucky; and at Camp Wheeler, Ga. He was on his way to serve in the Pacific when Army doctors in California found a problem with his knee.
His wife, Ruth, married
Mr. Cook on Aug. 14, 1948, at the age of 21 - 24 years his junior.
"He didn't talk much, but what did come out . . . he loved people, " she said. A member of Mussel Shoals Baptist Church in Owenton, Mr. Cook taught his family "to strongly have faith, believe in God . . . and to trust that God will always take care of us, " his daughter said. "I know he was ready and prepared to go a long time ago."
Other survivors include a stepson, Greg T. Race of Alabama; a stepdaughter, Laura Sue Speillman of Dry Ridge; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton, with visitation from 4 to 9 tonight. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Mussel Shoals Baptist Church, Owenton.
Aaron Austin Booher, 3, of Columbus, Miss., died July 10 at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Survivors include his parents, Capt. Aaron J. and Ivette Silva Booher of Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus; paternal grandparents, Edgar and Sally Booher of Union; maternal grandparents, Pedro and Olga Martinez of Sterling, Va.; maternal great-grandparents, Alberto Gutierrez of Sterling, Jose and Ela Martinez of Miami, Jorge and Silvia Silva of Belle Glade, Fla.
Services were Monday at Green Funeral Home, Herndon, Va. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D. C. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P. O. Box 50, Memphis, Tenn. 38101.
Edna R. Fogle Foster, 80, of Covington, died at 1:35 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Byron C. Foster, died in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Steven C. Foster of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Barbara A. Wolter and Nancy S. Wigger of of Villa Hills and Janice L. Riehe mann of Aurora, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Ft. Mitchell, with visitation from 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Ernie H. Johnson, 52, of Crittenden, died Friday at his home. He was a retired quality control employee for Allied Bendix Co. in Frankfort. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Grant County, W. G. Simpson Lodge No. 472 F & AM in Monterey, and past president of Industrial Workers Local No. 532. He was an Army Green Beret who served in the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie Webster Johnson; sons, Tobey Johnson and Edward Johnson, at home; daughters, Kelly L. Johnson and Shelly A. Moore of Crittenden; a brother, Darnell Johnson of Frankfort; parents, Herbert P. Johnson of Frankfort and Verna Cardwell Johnson of Shelbyville; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, with visitation 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Frankfort. Memorial are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.
Charles Lee Jones, 86, of Corinth, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
Arrangements are pending at Rogers Funeral Home, Corinth.
Josephine Katherine Binder Lancaster, 99, of Morning View, died at 4:25 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a retired teacher and a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Crestview Hills. She was a member of Daughters of American Revolution and Order of Eastern Star. Her husband, Charles Winifred Lancaster, died in 1984.
Survivors include daughters, Glenna Bridges of Independence and Donna Brown of Florence; seven grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, with visitation 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 2718 Dixie Highway, Crestview Hills 41017.
James De Armond Long, 80, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Florence, died Thursday at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
He was a retired salesman and a member of Matthews, S.C., Masonic Lodge No. 461 and the Scottish Rite. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post No. 400. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Charlotte, where he was president of the Methodist Men and a member of the adult fellowship Sunday school class.
Survivors include his wife, Theatus W. Long; daughters, Barbara L. Griffin of Matthews, S.C., Susan F. Ashley of Burlington and Sherri K. Ferguson of Sparta; a son, Kenneth B. Long of Concord, N.C.; sisters, Clara B. Long and Betty Jean Long, both of Charlotte, Carolyn Holland of Denver, N.C., and Essie Shaw of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Donald Long of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James F. "Frank" Merriss, 76, of New Liberty, died Thursday at Owen County Memorial Hospital in Owenton. He was a postal worker in Evansville, Ind., who retired in 1976.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jackson Merriss; sons, Jim Merriss of Greensboro, N.C., Jeff Merriss of Stamping Ground, Richard Merriss of Ev ansville, Ind., and Kenny Merriss of Panama City, Fla.; daughters, Joyce Rutledge and Patty Beckham, both of New Liberty; a brother, Joe Merriss of Cincinnati; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Edythe Maxine Mitchell, 86, of Melbourne, Fla., formerly of Covington, died at 1:01 a.m. Friday at her home. She was a former beautician. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Order of Eastern Star, Covington, and a member of Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 8191 Melbourne, Fla.
Her husband, Kenneth Johnson, died in 1956. A son, Hugh "Doc" Johnson, died in 1985. Survivors include a daughter, Louise Curley of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers, Clyde Meadows and Bill Love, both of Russell; a sister, Betty Love of Russell; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Services will be at noon Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation from 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Viola Thelma Rider, 89, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, formerly of Florence, died at 4:36 p.m. Tuesday at Life Care Center of Idaho Falls. She was a former sales clerk for Shillito's Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Florence Christian Church.
Her husband, Stanley Lee Rider, died in 1976. A son, Bill Rider, died in 1965.
Survivors include a daughter, Sheila Brennen of Idaho Falls; a son, Stan Rider of Waterford, Conn.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with visitation there from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Paint Lick Baptist Church Cemetery, Warsaw.

Chauncey Talbot, 84, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at The Highlands of Ft. Thomas Nursing Home.
He was a retired mechanic and former night dispatcher for Carlisle Construction Co., Wilder.
Survivors include a son, Wilbur Talbot of Onalaska, Wis.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington.

Allen F. Wilson, 64, of Aberdeen, Ohio, died Friday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired maintenance supervisor for IBM in Lexington and was working as a salesman for Stop Fire, which makes fire extinguishers. He was a Marine veteran and a member of Seddon United Methodist Church in Mays Lick, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Masonic Lodge No. 52, F & AM.
Survivors include his wife, Audrey B. Hawley Wilson; daughters, Beverly Spencer, Scherrie Pence and Connie McDowell of Maysville; sisters, Phyliss Osborne of Maysville and Ruby Long and Mary Graves of Bellbrook, Ohio; brothers, Clinton Wilson of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Denny Wilson of Versailles; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick, with visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Mays Lick Cemetery.
