Mentor's Celeste Goebel, church organist
Celeste Goebel made an impact on her community, both as a public servant and as a neighbor.
Mrs. Goebel, 75, of Mentor, died Saturday afternoon at her home.
She was a homemaker and the former postmaster at the Mentor post office. "That was when we had our own post office, in the general store, " said Mrs. Goebel's daughter, Bonnie Backer of Mentor.
The Mentor post office was closed in the late 1970s, though Mrs. Goebel remained a visible member of the community as the organist at Mentor Baptist Church.
"She was the organist there for 30 or 35 years, " said her daughter.
Debby Young of neighboring California recalled Mrs. Goebel playing the organ at Christ mas celebrations and other special events at her church, California Methodist.
"She was an accomplished musician, and a really cultured person, " said Peggy Schoulties of Mentor. "She was always tremendously friendly to me, and would lend me books when I was a teen-ager."
In addition to her daughter, survivors include her husband, J. V. Goebel; a son, James Goebel of Cincinnati; brothers, Aubrey Clift of California; a sister, Bernice Bass of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Grand View Cemetery, Mentor. Memorials are suggested to the church or the charity of the donor's choice.

Eleanor Bailey, 76, of Newport, died at 5:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. Arrangements are pending at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Jewell V. Bates, 90, of Florence, died at 7 p.m. Saturday at Arbors at Milford Nursing Home in Milford, Ohio. She was a homemaker and a member of South Side Baptist Church, Covington. Her husband, Gentry K. Bates, died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Bates Shearer of Fairfield, Ohio; a brother, Smiley George Haynie of California state; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church, 1501 Holman Ave., Covington 41011.
Floyd A. Cheek, 82, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at Three Rivers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cincinnati. He was a retired carpenter and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Clara Cheek, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Frank Cheek of Arcata, Calif., Robert Cheek of Highland Heights, and Gary Cheek of Lauderhill, Fla.; a daughter, Dee Yi of Cincinnati; stepdaughters, Kay Lloyd of Florence and Norma Goines of Highland Heights; a stepson, Larry Brock of Alexandria; a brother, General Cheek of Chatham, Ill.; sisters, Emily Osborne of Baxter, Verda Bedwell of Westminster, Md., Dolly Strunk of Coldiron; Nannette Baker of Pleasant Hill, Calif; Kathleen Partin of Middlesburg, Lillian Seipp of Baltimore; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Entombment will be in St. Stephen cemetery Mausoleum, Ft. Thomas.
Lillian B. "Tommy" Davis, 82, of Tallahassee, Fla., formerly of Carrollton, died Saturday in Tallahassee. She was a member of Capital City Christian Church in Tallahassee, and a former member of Whites Run Christian Church in Carroll County and Erlanger Church of Christ. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Ril ey Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorials are suggested to Capital City Christian Church, Erlanger Church of Christ, or the charity of the donor's choice.
Emma Frances Harmon, 68, of Carrollton, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired dietary department worker with Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. Her husband, Marcus D. Harmon, died in 1977.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Clifton of Carrollton; a son, Mark Harmon of Carrollton; a sister, Mary Sanders of Carrollton; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Milton.
Helen Josephine Horner, 82, of Wabash, Ind., died Friday at her home. She was a retired dietary cook with Millers Merry Manor East in Wabash. Her husband, Charles L. Horner, died on March 16.
Survivors include daughters, Kay Eakright of Wabash, Ind., and Helen Shanefelt of Andrews, Ind.; sons, Bobby Griffith of Covington, Harold L. Griffith and Max E. Griffith, both of Andrews, Ind.; stepsons, Charles E. Horner of Palatka, Fla., and James F. Horner of Henderson, Nev.; sisters, Ruby Lannfert of Huntington, Ind., Marjorie Cole of Marion, Ind., and Patty Herrick of Roanoke, Va.; brothers, Jack Garretson of Mishawaka, Ind., Paul D. Garretson and Willard L. Garretson, both of Huntington, Ind.; 15 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. EST Tuesday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Home in Wabash, Ind. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Wabash.
Ernie I. Hughes, 61, of Foster, died at 7 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired truck driver for Reis Concrete Co., Falmouth, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Sue Lonaker Hughes; sons, Albert Hughes of Elsmere and Ernie Russell Hughes at home; a daughter, Donna Bertine of Stewart, Fla.; brothers, Alfred Hughes of Falmouth and Elwood Hughes of Berlin; sisters, Mary Colemire of Petri and Nancy West of Berlin; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville 41056.
Chester "Chet" Frederick Hunter, 79, of Perry Park, died June 26 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Louisville. He was a retired sales promotion manager with International Harvester and a member of Zachary Taylor VFW Post No. 79, Owenton. He as a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Denice Dixon Hunter; sons, Adam Hunter of Perry Park, Chester Hunter Jr. of Marietta, Ohio, David Hunter of Franklin, Jimmy Hunter and Dan Hunter, both of Henderson; a daughter, Patricia Young of Louisville; a sister, Ruth Zimmerman of Marietta, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Seminary St., Owenton. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Hunter's body was donated to University of Cincinnati School of Medicine.
Mary Elizabeth Justice, 75, of Dayton, died at 5:10 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired accountant with Clopay Corp., Cincinnati, and a member of the Clopay Pioneer Club. She was a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton.
Survivors include sisters, Catherine Reynolds of Ft. Thomas, Virginia Gulley of Dayton and Carolyn Brundage of Naples, Fla.; and a brother, Robert Justice of Alexandria.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton, is handling arrangements.
Emma Linda Lykins, 78, of Highland Heights, died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a former teacher at Fairview High School, where she was a band director. She was a former employee of the Internal Revenue Service, and a member of Ft. Thomas Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband, Bernie S. Lykins; a daughter, Linda Carol Hanson of Alexandria; a son, Dr. Keith B. Lykins of Chicago; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is handling arrangements. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30329-4251.
Juanita C. Morris, 75, of Latonia, died at 1 p.m. Sunday at Drake Center nursing home, Cincinnati. She was a retired clerk with the Internal Revenue Service.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Morris of Latonia; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Cheryl Townsend Rucker, 45, of Cincinnati, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Thursday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Cecelia Ryan, 94, of Maysville, died Saturday at Columbia Hospital in Maysville.
She was a warehouse worker with Browning Manufacturing Co., Maysville, and a member of St. Patrick Church, Maysville. She was a member of the church Altar Society.
Survivors include a son, William Ryan III of Chicago; daughters, Charlotte Gast, Gloria German and Betty Williams, all of Maysville, and Lillian O'Neill of Cincinnati; sisters, Josephine Cooney and Frances Guilfoyle, both of Maysville; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. today at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Rosary services will be at 7:30 p.m. today. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville.
