Ernestine Elder, entertained seniors
Ernestine Elder was a big fan of 1940s-era singer Sophie Tucker and enjoyed going to nursing homes where she would imitate her idol.
Mrs. Elder, 82, of Pleasant Ridge, Ohio, formerly of Taylor Mill, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at Ridge Terrace South nursing home in Pleasant Ridge.
She was a hostess for the Golden Lamb restaurant in Lebanon and for the Gibson Hotel in Cincinnati.
Mrs. Elder, who grew up in Covington, was fond of singers such as Ms. Tucker and Pearl Bailey, who passed through Cincinnati on the club circuit in the '40s.
"She enjoyed imitating Sophie Tucker anywhere they had a piano bar, " said a brother, Glenn Lovell of Cincinnati. "She had a nice voice. In later years, she went to nursing homes and sang. She was a ham. Once she got hold of a mike, she did not let go."
Her husband, Charles Elder, died in 1972. They lived in Morrow, Ohio, where they bought a mansion thought to have been the first Holiday Inn, Mr. Lovell said.
Mrs. Elder donated the organ from that house to Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia, where she was a member, her brother said.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary.
A daughter, Jessica Carolyn Bennett, died in 1971.
Other survivors include a brother, Howard Lovell of Florence; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Visitation will be there from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Eleanor Belle Bailey, 76, of Newport, died at 5:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, John Bailey Sr.; daughters, Betty Pierce and Charlene Hopkins, both of Newport, Gloria Buckler of Berry, and Debbie Stamper of Southgate; a son, John Bailey Jr. of Newport; and a sister, Virginia Carter of Ft. Thomas.
Mass of Christian burial will 10 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport.
Prayers begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Rev. Charles Blake, 78, of Covington, died Monday at 12:45 a.m. at his home.

Hazel D. Crane, 93, of Hamersville, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Saturday at Villa Georgetown Nursing Home, Georgetown, Ohio.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Crane of Hamersville; and a sister, Blanche Vath of Burlington, Iowa; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Cremation Society of Greater Cincinnati is handling arrangements.
Cremation will be by Baxter's Crematorium.
Rose Louise Ernst, 83, of Cincinnati, died at 12:17 p.m. Sunday at Three Rivers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Miami Heights, Ohio.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Walter Ernst Jr. of Harrison, Ohio, Jerry Ernst of Cincinnati, Robert Ernst of Goshen, Ohio, Russell Ernst of Reno, Nev., and Jack Ernst of Bright, Ind.; a sister, Marian Jordon of Eaton, Ohio; brothers, Jacob Miller of Phoenix, and Edward Miller and George Miller, both of Northern Kentucky; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas.
Visitation will be there at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati.

Thomas C. Estepp, 69, of Newport, died Sunday at Ridge Terrace North nursing home, Pleasant Ridge, Ohio.
He was a certified welder at Foley's Construction Co.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Estepp; sons, Leland Estepp of Alexandria, and Rick Estepp of Erlanger; daughters, Susie Seiter of Alexandria, Carol Diedinhofer of Greenville, Ohio, and Donna Evans of Batavia, Ohio; sisters, Emma Bolton of Newport, Dolly Sebatian of Highland Heights, and Betty Abeling of Edgewood; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be there from 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
William Ferry, 65, of Florence, died at 12:25 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
William F. Forsythe, 43, of Florence, died Saturday at his home.
He was a steel-making team member at Gallatin Steel in Warsaw.
He also was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Steger Forsythe; a son, William Forsythe II of Florence; a daughter, Gloria Forsythe of Florence; stepsons, Dallas Frank and John Lee Frank II, both of Florence; a brother, Wayne Forsythe of California; and two sisters.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
John "Jack" Groeber, 78, of Covington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Loisteen Jackson, 84, Covington, died Monday at 1:20 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Hospice Unit, Covington.
Her husband, James Jackson, died in 1987.
She was a member of the St. James A.M.E. Church, Covington.
Survivors include sons, Fred Jackson and Thomas Jackson, both of Covington, and James Jackson, Petersburg, Va.; daughters, Elizabeth Brooke, Oklahoma City, Okla., Barbara Phipps, Covington, and Laroma Fowler and Earlene Stone, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Ruth William and Prentis Holt, both of Knoxville, Tenn; brothers, John Huddleston, Covington, Charles Huddleston, Indianapolis, and Chester Huddleston, Knoxville, Tenn; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be at the church Thursday from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be Friday in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Carod Powell Miller, 7 weeks old, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, was dead on arrival at 4 a.m. Sunday at University Hospital.
Survivors include his parents, Cassandra and Rodrick Miller of Cincinnati; a brother, Ramon Miller and sisters, Raven Miller and Alxies Miller and Cariah Miller, all of Cincinnati; maternal grandparents, Arleatha Riley of Covington and Alonzo Powell, of Cincinnati; paternal grandparents, Ann and Corneal Miller of Cincinnati; great-grandfather,
Elder Roy Reed of Covington; and great-grandmother, Hurdie Carpenter of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Little Rock Baptist Church, Covington.
Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.

She was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Cremation will be by Hillside Chapel.

Flora Chadwick Stull, 65, of Florence, died at 10:39 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker.
