Curtis J. Lusby's carvings reflected love of outdoors
Curtis J. Lusby was an outdoorsman and wood carver whose keen intellect was not dulled by the passing years.
"He was always reading, always keeping up with things, " said a son, Ronald Lusby of Alexandria.
"Even to the end, his mind was very sharp."
Curtis Lusby, of Cold Spring, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. He was 81.
Mr. Lusby was a native of Newport.
He worked 20 years for Nutone Inc. of Cincinnati, which manufactures kitchen appliances and door chimes.
When Mr. Lusby retired in the 1970s, he was the company's manager of material control and in charge of procuring materials used in the manufacturing process.
He was a past president of the Campbell County Game and Fish Protective Association and edited the association's newsletter.
"He loved the outdoors, " said Ronald Lusby. "He was active not only in the Campbell County Game and Fish Protective Association, but also the League of Kentucky Sportsmen."
Mr. Lusby's love of nature was mirrored the meticulous wood carvings he made of birds and water fowl.
He also was a member of the Newport Elks.
"He was very sociable, " said Ronald Lusby, adding that people always knew exactly where they stood with his father.
"He was very outspoken. I admired him.
"He was always very straightforward and there was never a doubt about what was on his mind."
Mr. Lusby also leaves his wife, Claire Lusby; other sons, Larry Lusby of Covington, Terry Lusby of Mountain View, Calif., and Bary Lusby of White Villa; a daughter, Connie Mahaney of Ft. Thomas; a sister, Gertrude Clephane of Ft. Thomas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Radel Funeral Home in Highland Heights.
Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Monday.
Frances M. Bokelo, 80, of Erlanger, died Monday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Leisure Timers, Elsmere Seniors and St. Henry Church Altar Society, Elsmere. Her husband, George W. Bokelo, and daughter, Beverly Bokelo, both died in 1986.
Survivors include a sister, Verona M. Worster of Erlanger.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright 41011, or the American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.
Pauline Hegener, 73, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Anita Stewart Nelson Jasper, 80, of Covington, died Wednesday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Covington. Her husband, Benjamin Jasper, died in 1994. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Covington, and the Charles L. Henderson American Legion Auxilary Post 166 in Covington.
Survivors include daughters, Joan Smith and Deborah Washington, both of Covington, and Mildred Saxon, of Columbus, Ohio; sons, Milton Jasper, Cincinnati, and Herman Jasper, Covington; brothers, Roy Nelson, Covington, William Nelson, Cincinnati, and Robert Nelson, Maysville; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 7:30 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, 120 E. Ninth St., Covington. Visitation will be there from 6 p.m. until the time of services Monday. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington is in charge of arrangements.
Ida Frances Maxwell, 89, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Extendacare of Bedford.
She was a homemaker and a member of Moxley Baptist Church, Carroll County. She attended Worthville Christian Church. Her husband, Otha Maxwell, died in 1984.
Survivors include a daughter, Belle Furnish of Carrollton; a son, Larry Maxwell of Wheatley; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Carroll County Senior Citizens.
Shawn Lee McAlister, 24, of Carrollton, died Thursday at his home. He was a member of Faith Community Church, Carrollton.
Survivors include his parents, Carroll "Bimp" and Sheila McGuire McAlister of Carrollton; a brother, Shannon Wayne McAlister of Carrollton; grandparents, Bernice McGuire of Bedford, and Ike and Wanda McAlister of Carrollton; and great-grandparents, Lucille Long of Carrollton and Stella Oliver of Columbus, Ind.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Family Worship Center, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home in Carrollton, and at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Gladys I. Metcalfe, 88, of Augusta, died Thursday at Extended Care Center in Augusta.
Arrangements are pending at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Allen Mynatt, 68, of Edgewood, died at 1:18 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired traffic manager with OK Trucking Co., and a past president of Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge 607, Dayton. He was a past president of the Bellevue Vets, Simon Kenton American Legion Post 20 in Elsmere, and Ushers Union Local 375. He was a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Fleisch Mynatt; a son, Jeffrey B. Mynatt of West Chester, Ohio; daughters, Janie Mynatt of Covington, Julie Myers and Joanie Henderson, both of Edgewood, and Joyce Hughes of Ashland; a brother, Harvey B. Mynatt Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Eleanor Riddle of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Masonic services will be there at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Hattie Peddicord, 99, of Williamstown, died 9:15 p.m. Thursday at Owenton Manor Health Care Facility, Owenton. Arrangements are pending at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Vernon Lee Penick, 66, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired security guard with the Internal Revenue Service and a Korean War veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia Webster Penick; sons, Matthew Penick of Dry Ridge, Louis Penick of Walton, and Vincent Penick; stepsons, Stacey Broadway and Dean Broadway, both of Northern Kentucky; a daughter, Rebecca Donahue of Falmouth; brothers, Hershel Penick, Gail Penick and Glenn Penick, all of Northern Ken tucky; sisters, Dixie and Rosalee, both of Northern Kentucky; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Webster Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, is handling arrangements.
Kenneth G. Pfetzer, 48, of Middletown, R.I., formerly of Covington, died July 21 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was a retired police officer and a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Pfetzer; a daughter, Amy Pfetzer of Middletown, Ohio; a son, Mark Pfetzer at home; his mother, Lucille Pfetzer of Covington; brothers, Mike Pfetzer of Edgewood, Mark Pfetzer of Cincinnati and David Pfetzer of Covington; sisters, Maxine Wells and Kim Pfetzer, both of Covington, and Connie Kleier of Villa Hills.

Ruth Ann Rowekamp, 67, of Newport, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired secretary with Ed Schadler State Farm Insurance Co., Covington. A son, Tom Rowekamp, died in 1985.
Survivors include her hus band, Jim Rowekamp; a son, Craig Rowekamp of Dayton; a daughter, Debbie Ann Morse of Little Rock, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Newport Elks Ladies Auxiliary ser vices will be there at 7:30 p.m. today. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Pearl C. Sanning, 94, of Bellevue, died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired machine operator with American Book Co., and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
Survivors include a brother, Charles C. Rapp of Florence; and sisters, Estelle Sarran of Monroe, Ohio, and Betty Haggard of Florence.
