William J. Rogers, Piner fire chief
William J. Rogers owned a security business, managed a material-handling firm and took on a variety of side jobs to provide for his family.
But it was during his tenure as chief of the Piner Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1970s and early 1980s that his influence among other people was truly felt, said his wife of 40 years, Alma Rogers of Morning View.
"He did the research for a tax for the fire district. And he went door to door to make sure the tax passed, " Mrs. Rogers said. "Today, we have better fire equipment because of that tax."
Mr. Rogers, 58, of Morning View, died at 3:17 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a former manager with Bode Finn Co. in Cincinnati and a member of Wilmington Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Army Reserves and once provided security for Bavarian Trucking.
Mr. Rogers met his wife when they were students at Holmes High School in Covington.
They graduated in 1957 and their oldest daughter graduated from the same school 20 years later.
"He was handsome. He was kind. And he always thought of me and our girls before he thought of himself, "
Mrs. Rogers said. "He was the best man. They just don't make them like that anymore."
Mr. Rogers also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his wife said.
Other survivors include his daughters, Cindy L. Webster of Williamstown, Brenda L. Carmack of Crittenden and Kathy M. Roberts of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a brother, John W. Rogers of Covington; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Clyde J. Abbott, 73, of Park Hills, died at 2:20 p.m. Monday at his home.
He was a mechanic with Jamison Motors and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Nelly Abbott; a son, Marvin Callahan of Independence; daughters, Clydia Kissinger, Patricia Wilder and Charlene Wallace, all of Covington, Charlotte Hackett of Madison, Ind., and Deanna Fugate of Hebron; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Harry B. Batson, 83, of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Grand Haven Nursing Home in Cynthiana.
He was a retired carpenter and a member of Oddville United Methodist Church, Harrison County.
His wife, Carrie Mullen Batson, died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Harry Donald Batson of Cynthiana; daughters, Joyce E. Price of Cynthiana, Betty A. Prows of Harrison County and Hazel L. Evans of Danville; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Nellie Gaddis Howard, 81, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home in Highland Heights.
She was a homemaker and a member of Augusta United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Garrett Lee "Spider" Howard, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters, Marcella McDowell of Raceland, Martha Hamm of Silver Grove and Ramona Roberts of Augusta; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Augusta.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery.

Bertha Martin, 83, of Crescent Springs, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a retired nurse with American Nursing Service.
Survivors include daughters, Marie Roberts of Southgate and Laura Hunt of Crescent Springs; a brother, Virgil Robinson of Cincinnati; eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Ruth S. Reich, 88, of Union, died at 11:15 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a retired AT&T; chief operator and a member of Florence Christian Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Florence Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Burial will be in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Roy Rogers, 82, of Conners ville, died Tuesday at his home. He was a retired farmer, a retired employee of Joseph E. Seagrams Co. and a member of Connersville Christian Church and Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Elizabeth Giles Rogers; a son, Roy Keith Rogers of Connersville; a daughter, Sandra Zumwalt of Cynthiana, sisters, Hattie Lawson of Florence, Eliza Giles of Cynthiana and Virgie Beagle of Florida; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.
