Carl Robert Conrad Schmidt, S. Ft. Mitchell mayor, firefighter
Whenever South Ft. Mitchell needed a job done, Carl Robert Conrad Schmidt was there.
He was mayor of South Ft. Mitchell from 1960 to 1964, a councilman from 1954 to 1960, a former assistant fire chief for the city, and even a policeman in the early 1940s.
Mr. Schmidt, 91, of Erlanger, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Mr. Schmidt also served as scoutmaster for the local Boy Scouts troop and ran his own general contracting business.
"He looked out for the other guy, " said his son, David C. Schmidt of Ft. Mitchell. "When there was something to do and a need, he said, "Well, I'll do it!' "
He inherited his sense of civic duty from his father, Charles "Pop" Schmidt, one of the founding fathers of South Ft. Mitchell, which merged with North Ft. Mitchell in 1967.
While he was mayor, Mr. Schmidt approved the construction of Expressway Plaza in Ft. Mitchell, David C. Schmidt said.
Through his business, Mr. Schmidt renovated many of the storefronts in Covington along Madison Avenue from Third Street to 19th Street.
"Recently he said his prices were higher than anybody else, but his work was better than anybody else, " his son said. "His work was done in the good, old German tradition."
Mr. Schmidt also was a director of Union Savings and Loan Association. He was a member of Glencoe Church of Christ. His wife, Helen M. Walz Schmidt, died in 1993.
Other survivors include three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. today at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Cincinnati Association for the Blind, 2045 Gilbert Ave., Cincinnati 45202.
Billy Lee Baker, 69, of Falmouth, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired employee of General Motors, Cincinnati, and a member of United Auto Workers Local 674, Cincinnati. He also attended Falmouth Wesleyan Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Baker; daughters, Sheila Roberts, Sherry Wilcher and Evelyn Carr, all of Falmouth, Julie Looney of Highland Heights and Linda Baker and Becky Baker, both of Grant County; a son, Danny Williams of Logansport, Ind., and Mike Baker of Grant County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to the church, Falmouth, 41040.
Ronald C. Ballard, 55, of Independence, died Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, of complications following heart surgery. He was a yard clerk with Norfolk and Southern Railroad, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda C. Thompson of Burlington; his father and stepmother, James and Anna Mae Ballard of Frankfort; a brother, Charles E. Ballard of Independence; a half-brother, Billy Wayne Ballard of Frankfort; a stepbrother, James Underwood of Frankfort; half-sisters, Ann Redman and Lisa Stephens, both of Frankfort; a stepsister, Shirley Barber of Frankfort; and one grandchild.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright 41011.
Irene Catherine Blainey, 90, of Dayton, died Saturday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a retired telephone operator.
Survivors include sisters, Angela "Sis" Zimmerman and Mary J. Nikola, both of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bernard Church, Dayton. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Carl G. Caldwell, 68, of Erlanger, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Bobby J. Daniels, 57, of Burlington, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a bricklayer with Freeman Masonry, Union, and a member of Union Masonic Lodge. He also was an honorary member of Union VFW Post.
Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Freeman Daniels; daughters, Carol Bearden and Rita Jones, both of Burlington, and Sandra Gross of Union; sons, Bobby Daniels Jr. and Randy Daniels, both of Union; his stepmother, Jacqueline Daniels of Erlanger; half-brothers, Billy Joe Daniels of Covington and Ronnie Daniels of Corinth; a half-sister, Anna Ruff of Erlanger; and 13 grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Beechgrove Holiness Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas 41075.
Elizabeth "Libby" Field, 84, of Falmouth, died at 7:40 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Victoria S. Thornton Fitzgerald, 38, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Aug. 11 at Columbia Medical Center in Port St. Lucie. She was a former bar manager with Gatsby's in Springfield, Ohio.
Survivors include her husband, Jeff Fitzgerald; a son, Jacob Fitzgerald at home; her parents, Cliff and Dottie Thornton of Alpine, Tenn.; a brother, Glenn Thornton of Alpine; and a sister, Beverly Paul of Alpine.
Services were Aug. 16 at Aycock Funeral Home in Port St. Lucie.
Doris Goatee, 68, of Owenton, died Sunday at University Medical Center, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Harmony Baptist Church, Owen County.
Survivors include daughters, Mellie Phillips of Owenton and Rebecca Coates of Frankfort; sons, Carl Goatee of Cynthiana and Leonard Goatee of Monticello; a brother, Wallace Braden of Lexington; and four grandchildren.

Clara E. Nieman Grefer, 91, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John A. Grefer, died in 1976. A son, Richard Grefer, died in 1990.
Survivors include son, John "Jack" Grefer of Ft. Wright, Ralph Grefer of Clay, N.Y., James Grefer of Florence and Joe Grefer of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Martha Gordon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sisters, Dorothy Kling of Ft. Mitchell, Margie Meyers of Crestview Hills and Mary Nieman of Villa Hills; 21 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

J. James Kerl, 91, of Louisville, formerly of Covington, died at 5:12 p.m. Saturday at Audubon Hospital, Louisville.
Survivors include sisters, Elizabeth Sharpe of Clearwater, Fla., and Emma Ochs of Covington; and a brother, George Bill Kerl of Ft. Wright.

Mauda E. Kindoll, 77, of Florence, died Sunday at her home. She was a retired food-service employee with American Airlines. Her son, Gary Wayne Kindoll, died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki L. Kindoll Dice of Melrose Park, Ill.; and a brother, Brian Shrader of Cincinnati.

Irene Grace Nienaber, 92, of Latonia, died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired telephone operator with Western Union Co., Covington. Her husband, Richard Nienaber, died in 1971.
Survivors include a daughter, Joyce L. Wilder of Independence; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frank M. Pangallo, 60, of Newport, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired manufacturing engineer with General Electric, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Tina Bouras Pangallo; daughters, Carmella Heinriches of Cold Spring and Angie Bonhaus of Southgate; sons, Rocky Pangallo of Highland Heights, Jimmy Pangallo, Frank Pangallo Jr., and Chris Pangallo, all of Newport, Nick Pangallo of Florence and Steve Pangallo of Ft. George David Spangler Jr., 51, of Melbourne, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at his home. He was a disabled tailor and upholsterer.
Survivors include a daughter, Tonya Ann Hahn of Orlando, Fla.; and his fiancee, Sharon Sharp of Melbourne.

Juanita Turner, 70, of Covington, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday at Crestview Park Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
She was an aide at St. John Nursing Home, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Truman Turner of Dayton; a daughter, Sharon Waddell of Covington; a brother, Jim Hill of Corbin; a sister, Doris Fore of Corbin; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Hazel Williams, 81, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana. She was a homemaker and a member of Short Creek Baptist Church, Pendleton County.
