R.L. McKenney, country doctor
Dr. Robert L. McKenney, one of the last country doctors in Pendleton County, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas after an apparent heart attack at his home. He was 71.
Dr. McKenney practiced medicine in Falmouth for 43 years, starting in 1954, when house calls were common. He even made "fender calls."
"There were times when somebody would call the house and Dad would tell them to start driving to Falmouth and he'd start driving to them, " said his son, Robert McKenney Jr. of Butler. "Wherever they'd meet, he'd put them on the car fender and look at them."
Robert McKenney Jr. recalled patients knocking on the door late at night. His father would invite them in and tend them in the living room.
"At one time he was the only doctor in the county."
Dr. McKenney served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. After the war he went to medical school, but he never lost his love of airplanes. He eventually bought a plane and joined the Flying Physicians, a national group.
He was a general practitioner and later went into family practice in Falmouth. Some of his patients included the children and grandchildren of babies he delivered, said his wife, Garnet McKenney.
His father had been a doctor in Falmouth.
"Everybody in town knew Dr. McKenney - either my grandfather or my father, " said Robert McKenney Jr.
He was chairman of the board of Three Rivers Health Department, a member of the Kentucky Medical Association, a past member of the Pendleton County Airport Board and a past member of the Falmouth Board of Education. He was a member of Falmouth Christian Church, where he sang in the choir.
He also was an avid sportsman. He played tennis until a few years ago and had played golf the day before he died.
