Juanita Manlief Smith was Mrs. Santa Claus
Juanita Manlief Smith brought kindness, friendship and trust to many people on both sides of the Ohio River.
Mrs. Smith, 72, of Anderson Township, Ohio, played Mrs. Santa Claus for 15 years to children outside her home.
She donned a red suit, coat and cape and sang carols for the children.
She was well-known at Beechwood Elementary School in Ft. Mitchell for her support of her grandchildren in sports and academics.
"She was jolly and she laughed.
She always wanted to see someone happy and smile, " said a daughter, Sandra L. Smith of Bellevue.
"Through her family, she knew a lot of people in Ohio and Kentucky. She was an outgoing woman and anyone was welcome here to eat.
She handed out candy canes to kids and baby-sat neighborhood children."
Mrs. Smith died Wednesday at her home.
She was a bowling instructor for King Pin Bowling Lanes in Anderson Township and a member of Kenwood Baptist Church in Sycamore Township. She was a member of Ida Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Smith created a warm environment for her children, her daughter said, attending soccer games and other sporting events and encouraging her children to do their best.
"She was just the way mothers should be, " Sandra Smith said.
"And she loved the Cincinnati Reds. One time I got John ny Bench's autograph for her and she screamed with delight."
Other survivors include her husband of 46 years, Oscar E. Smith; daughters, Rebecca S. Haake of Ft. Mitchell and Dinah S. Liggett of Anderson Township; a son, Steven W. Smith of Anderson Township; a sister, Virginia Hoffman of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at T. P. White Funeral Home, Cincinnati, with visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Eastern Star service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Kathryn Banzhaf, 96, of Latonia, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor, Covington.
She was a retired employee of The Cincinnati Post. Her husband, Emil H. Banzhaf, died in 1986.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, with visitation from 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of choice.
Margie Elliott, 57, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Baptist Church, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Elliott of Dry Ridge; a son, James Elliott of Walton; daughters, C. Renay Roberts of Dry Ridge, Marlana Nelson of Loveland, Ohio, Teresa Bosley of Parris Island, S.C., and Andrea Kannady of Williamstown; brothers, Bill Layers of Pittsburgh and John Layers of Sardinia, Ohio; and a sister, Eva Shaffer of Amelia, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge, with visitation 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Harmon S. Overbey, 86, of Mt. Olivet, died Friday at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Lexington.
He was a retired farmer and former member of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
As a state representative he sponsored the bill that gave 18-year-olds the right to vote in Kentucky elections.
He was a member of Piqua Christian and Mt. Olivet First Christian churches and of Mt. Olivet Lodge No. 291 F&AM, Riley M. See American Legion Post, and a former member of Mt. Olivet Lions Club.
His wife, Virginia Roseamond Godbey Overbey, died June 24.
Survivors include a son, William Harmon Overbey of Crescent Springs; a daughter, Nancy Lelia Overbey Linville of Mt. Olivet; and four grandchildren.
Services and visitation are pending. Burial will be in Piqua Christian Church Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Mt. Olivet Christian Church or to the charity of choice.

Sue Elizabeth Teremi, 76, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a retired clerical worker for R. L. Polk Co., Cincinnati and a member of Imanuel Baptist Church, Covington.
Her husband, Peter Teremi Jr., died earlier this year.
A son, Peter Teremi, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, James Teremi of Wascilla, Alaska; a brother, Charles Thompson of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport, with visitation at 10 a.m.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Lorene Baskin Vance, 71, of Covington, died Wednesday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Charlie P. Vance; sons, Charles Leonard Vance of Dallas, Howard Vance and Edward Vance, both of Covington and Hilliard Vance of Elsmere; daughters, Constance Goldsby of Covington, Malvonia McCauley of Lemon, Calif., and Phyllis Pass of San Diego; sisters, Ella Baker, Cora Simms and Nettie Morris of Cincinnati, and Lueaver Jasper of Covington; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the church, with visitation from 5:30 p.m.
Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.
