Josephine Henke, ran Latonia store

In the days before large supermarkets were common, Josephine Henke operated the consummate "mom-and-pop" store in Ludlow.

Actually, Henke's was more of a "mom" store, with Mrs. Henke doing most of the work, said her daughter, Margie Fairchild, of Florence. "Of course us kids had to help, but my father had other jobs, " she said.

Mrs. Henke, 95, of Florence, died Friday in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

Mrs. Henke operated the grocery, on Montrose Street in Ludlow, near West Covington, from 1932 until 1963, when she retired. The building is now apartments.

"She had a full line of groceries and meats. She was known for that, " said Mrs. Fairchild.

"They were nice people. It was an old-style family store, " said John Farrell, a long-time Ludlow resident and former mayor.

"It was a mom-and-pop grocery before the big stores came in. During the Depression and World War II she regularly carried people on the books for credit, " said Mrs. Fairchild.

The business was a little too cramped to be a social center, but customers still found a way to visit, Mrs. Fairchild said. "They might come in for one thing and then spend a half-hour talking, " she said.

Her mother was active in St. Ann Church, Covington, and also loved to play cards and bowl, Mrs. Fairchild said. "She bowled into her mid-80s, even after having a hip replacement. She played cards until just a few years ago. She would play euchre and 500 rum and enter tournaments. She'd beat the men, too."

Mrs. Henke was a member of the St. Ann Altar Society, and Ludlow and West Covington Senior Citizens groups. She was a member of Women's Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Newport.
