Dr. Robert Charles Smith, medical pioneer, devoted father
Dr. Robert Charles Smith was a pioneering medical authority who opened the first mental health units at the old Boothe Hospital and St. Elizabeth Medical Centers.
He also opened the electroencephalogram departments at St. Luke and St. Elizabeth hospitals. And he was a member and an assistant trustee of the Kentucky Medical Association and a past president of the Northern Kentucky Medical Society.
Besides being an outstanding doctor, Mr. Smith was a family man who encouraged his children to excel, said daughter-in-law, Terry Burt of Alexandria. Two of Dr. Smith's sons became doctors, as well.
"He always thought education was the key. He loved to read and knew history. We always wanted him to play Trivial Pursuit because he knew all the answers, " Mrs. Burt said.
Dr. Smith, 78, of Northport, Fla., and Highland Heights, died Friday at his home in Highland Heights.
He enjoyed his hobbies as much as medical practice, Mrs. Burt said.
He was an excellent wood carver; he gardened and grew fruit trees; he studied birds and was a solid electrician. He also made a habit of attending his grandson's basketball games.
"He was very quiet, very easy-going, " Mrs. Burt said.
"He was an outstanding person. He was born in Cincinnati and grew up in Covington and he loved to travel."
Dr. Smith was a member of American Psychiatric Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the Covington Scottish Rite and the Syrian Temple in Cincinnati. He was a member of the American Medical EEG Association and was a Founding Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society. After retiring, he taught wood carving at Campbell County Senior Center.
Dr. Smith also was an Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include his wife, Dorothy Eicher Smith; sons, Dr. Victor R. Smith, Dr. R. Christopher Smith and Mark T. Smith, all of Cincinnati, and Bill Burt of Alexandria; daughters, Mel issa F. Hall of Scottsburg, Ind., Pamela A. Reed and Carol Speaks, both of Highland Heights; a sister, Gay Garnett of Conroe, Texas; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Episcopal Church, Newport. Dr. Smith's body is being donated to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Warren Gaston Adams, 73, of Erlanger, died at 7:10 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was an electrical engineer with Litton Industries and Aerojet General Corp. He also was a member of Florence Masonic Lodge No. 949 F&AM, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Amistoso Adams; a daughter, Kathleen Adams of Erlanger; sons, Daniel Adams of Fayetteville, Ohio, Michael Adams of Linden, Mich., and Richard Adams of Demossville; sisters, Juanita McIntosh of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Nancy Feldon of Denver, N.C.; a brother, Blake Adams of Sanford, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Camp Nelson Cemetery, Nicholasville. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Stith Funeral Home, Florence, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Earl M. Arnsparger, 81, of Latonia, died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday at his home. He was a retired owner/operator of Earl's Barber Shop, Latonia, and a former truck driver. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 203. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Disabled American Veterans.
His wife, Gladys Louise Arnsparger, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Gary E. Arnsparger of Edgewood, and a grandson.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.
Jewell Louise Beckett, 100, of Butler, died Sunday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a farmer and a member of Butler Baptist Church.
Survivors include a nephew, John Beckett of Butler; and a cousin, Jim Beckett of Butler.
Graveside services will be at sunrise Thursday at Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, 107 Peoples St., Butler 41006. Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.
James M. Broadaway, 77, of Ludlow, died at 4 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired driver with Square Deal Cartage Co., Detroit, and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Ludlow. He was a member of the church's Methodist Men organization; a member of the Teamsters Union and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Broadaway; a daughter, Karen Parrott of Ludlow; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Raven Creek cemetery in Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to the church, 319 Oak St., Ludlow 41016.
Nora Caswell, 81, of Walton, died at 2:48 a.m. Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. She was a retired caregiver with Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.
Survivors include a son, John Vickers of Walton; a daughter, Linda McNay of Williamstown; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
Jack Stanley Cecil, 81, of Latonia, died at 9:50 p.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home in Latonia. He was a retired executive market representation manager with Ford Motor Co., and a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Latonia, where he sang in the church choir. He also was a volunteer with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary K. Cecil; a daughter, Jayne Imber of Lake Orion, Mich.; a son, Jeffrey S. Cecil of Irwin, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati 45203.
Marie Dirkes, 67, of Ft. Wright, died at 1:35 a.m. Monday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker and a member of Emergency Support Team of Ft. Wright and Ft. Wright Garden Club. Her husband, Nicholas B. Dirkes, died in 1995.
Survivors include sons, Nicholas G. Dirkes of Taylor Mill, Steven Dirkes and Terrence Dirkes, both of Cincinnati, and James Dirkes of Ft. Wright; daughters, Anne Sanders of Crescent Park, Mary Dirkes of Ft. Wright and Elaine Oldiges of Camp Springs; a sister, Jane Churchill of Newark, Del.; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Stanley Morris Dougherty, 81, of Highland Heights, died Monday at his home. He was an insurance adjuster with Continental Life Insurance, and a member of First Baptist Church, Cold Spring. He also was a Shriner, a member of the Scottish Rite, a past president of the Cincinnati Claims Association and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Dougherty.

Gladys Streeter Fullerton, 92, of Florence, died at 7:01 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Covington, and a former member of Florence Woman's Club. She also was a member of Boone County Garden Club and the Cincinnati chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her husband, A. W. Fullerton Jr., died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte F. Coleman of Florence; sons, Don Fullerton of Murray, Utah, and Gordon Fullerton of Florence; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Frank George Glaizer, 82, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired tool and die model maker with A. O. Smith Co. in Tipp City, Ohio, and a former member of the Elks Lodge in Troy, Ohio. He also was a member of the Tipp City Eagles, and an Army veteran. His first wife, Jane Glaizer Crawley, died in 1986. His second wife, Virginia Bausman Glaizer, died in 1994. A daughter, Virginia Millhouse, died in 1988.
Survivors include sons, Frank George Glaizer Jr. of Dayton, Ohio, and Thomas Joseph Glaizer of Athens, Ohio; daughters, Rebecca Hoover of Cincinnati and Cheryl Thaxton of Florence; and a brother, Joseph Glaizer of Granburg, Texas.
Graveside services will be at noon Thursday at Riverside cemetery in West Milton, Ohio. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Robert Goebel, 67, of Alton, Ill., formerly of Villa Hills, died at 9:15 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a superintendent of maintenance with the sanitation departments in Bromley and Kansas City, Kan., and with St. Frances Martyr of St. George Convent Church in Alton. His first wife, Dorothy Jane Goebel, died in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Mary Goebel; daughters, Sister Raphaele O.S.F. of New Jersey, Joyce Goebel of Taylor Mill, Jean Miller of Latonia, Janet Cropper of Edgewood and Judy Tingley of Erlanger; sons, James Goebel of Shreveport, La., and John Goebel of Las Vegas; and 13 grandchildren.

Elizabeth T. Gross, 88, of Florence, died at 12:50 p.m. Sunday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a retired secretary with Kuchle Ford, and a member of Florence Baptist Church. She also was a member of Boone County Senior Citizens and Boone County 4-H and Utopia Club. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. David Lee Hildebrant, 74, of Latonia, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired driver with Halls Trucking Co., Cincinnati, and a member of East Side Church of the Nazarene, Covington, where he was an usher. He also was a member and past quartermaster of Marshall-Schildmeyer VFW Post No. 6095, Latonia. He was a Teamster and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Hildebrant; a son, Darreall Hildebrant Sr. of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Sandra Harris and Deborah Fights, both of Cincinnati, and Shirley Kiskaden of Florence; brothers, Jerry Hildebrant of Villa Hills and Elmer Hildebrant of New Baden, Ill.; sisters, Geneva Bandy of Erlanger, Laverne Hatter of Latonia and Norma Lou Rowland of Alexandria; 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mellie Jones, 93, of Covington, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a homemaker.

Norma H. Mastin, 66, of Mt. Olivet, died Monday at Robertson County Health Care Center in Mt. Olivet. She was a retired Jockey employee and a member of Blue Licks Assembly of God, Mays Lick.

Harold "Bud" Leroy William NeCamp, 84, of Alexandria, died at 11 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was a supervisor with Interlake Steel, Newport, and a member of Newport Lodge No. 358 F&AM. His wife, Allen Evelyn Elizabeth Frances NeCamp, died in 1995. A son, Harold Paul NeCamp, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Jo Ann Loan of Alexandria; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Herman Robert True, 57, of Alexandria, died Monday at Veteran's Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a meat cutter for IGA in Falmouth. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Marie True; a daughter, Samantha True of Cleveland; his mother, Mabel True of Alexandria; brothers, Michael True of Florence, Tom True of Shepherdsville and Jack True of Butler; sisters, Marilyn Neil of Florence, Sue Haynes of Claryville, and Phyllis Joseph, Helen Schultz, Barbara Fries and Melinda True, all of Alexandria.
