Restaurateur Ruby Butts of Alexandria
Ruby Jewell Wilson Butts operated two restaurants in Campbell County.
But a son, Donald L. Butts Jr. of Elsmere, remembers her mainly for her dedication to her children and the children of others who didn't have a home.
"She would take in children who needed help. I'd say there were a half-dozen kids she helped who are now adults, " Mr. Butts said. "There was a lot of life in the house."
Mrs. Butts, 73, of Alexandria, died at 4:23 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
She was the former owner of Ruby and Don's Cafe in New port and the Alpine Steak House in Silver Grove. Her husband, Donald L. Butts Sr., died in 1970 at the age of 43.
A son, Christopher J. Butts, died in 1962.
Mrs. Butts was born in Harlan County in 1924 and lived through the Great Depression. She sold pencils as a child and married
her husband in 1947.
The Butts opened their cafe at Ninth and Central in Newport in 1962. They later opened the Alpine Steak House in Silver Grove in 1970.
Mrs. Butts remained active in the restaurant business until she retired in the early 1980s.
She enjoyed helping others, especially needy children who didn't have a roof over their heads.
"She truly did embrace and love those children like her own. They are adults now who are doing well, " Mr. Butts said.
Mrs. Butts also volunteered at the Lakeside Place Nursing Home; the Right to Life office of the Diocese of Covington; and the St. Mary's Senior Citizens Club in Alexandria.
Other survivors include sons, Dennis P. Butts of Alexandria, Thomas R. Butts, James A. Butts and Michael J. Butts, all of Erlanger, and John E. Butts of Dallas; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.. Donations may be sent to the American Lung Association; the Parish Kitchen in Covington; or the Right to Life office of the Diocese of Covington.
Pauline Cummings, 72, of Crescent Springs, died at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, George Cummings; daughters, Darlene Nienaber of Dry Ridge, Deborah Hoh of Walton and Patricia Ann Hensley of Corinth; brothers, Robert Davis, Lewis Davis and Jennings Davis, all of Mahar, W.Va.; sisters, Christine Schultz of Cincinnati, Imogene Foltz of Crescent Springs, Loretta Janka of Stafford, Va., and Norma Lawrence of Alexandria; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Rosella C. Shoenberger Feldmann Hemmerle, 86, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
She was a homemaker. Her first husband, Edward Feldmann, died in 1968.
Her second husband, Charles Hemmerle, died in 1970.
Survivors include daughters, Marietta Kaufman of Cold Spring and Rosella Darpel of Edgewood; sons, Thomas Feldmann of Hamilton, Ohio, and James Feldmann of Ft. Wright; eight stepchildren, 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Audrey Bromwell Martin, 76, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Sunny Acres United Methodist Church, Taylor Mill. She also was a member of United Methodist Women's Society and Sunny Acres Seniors.
Her husband, Richard Martin, died in 1980.
Survivors include daughters, Diane Johnson of Walton, Teresa Johnson of Florence and Karen Sweatt of Taylor Mill; sisters, Vivian Blank of Taylor Mill, Juanita Deemer and Barbara Cliff, both of Covington; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to the church, 4160 Taylor Mill Road, Taylor Mill 41015.

Fred D. McDaniel, 87, of Southgate, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired punch press operator with Allis Chalmers in Norwood, Ohio.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
William A. Simpson, 81, of Ft. Thomas, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
He was a cab driver and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Joan Christian of Boston; sisters, Doris Pat Rummel of Edgewood and Jeanne Wilson of Cincinnati; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
Herman Robert True, 57, of Alexandria, died Monday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a meat cutter with Falmouth IGA.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Marie True; a daughter, Samantha True of Cleveland; his mother, Mabel True; brothers, Michael True of Florence, Tom True of Shepherdsville and Jack True of Butler; and sisters, Marilyn Neil of Florence, Sue Haynes of Claryville, Phyllis Joseph, Helen Schultz, Barbara Fries and Melinda True, all of Alexandria.
Services will be at 7 p.m. today at People Funeral Home, Grants Lick.
Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. today. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas 41075.
Vernon S. Utz Sr., 69, of Highland Heights, died at 6 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.
He was a salesman with Nationwide Paper Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. Joseph Seniors, Cold Spring.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Rappold Utz; daughters, Debbie Spangler of Mentor, Joyce Harden of Crestview and Teri Ochsner of Alexandria; a son, Vernon S. Utz Jr. of Butler; a sister, Dolores Wolfzorn of Ft. Thomas; a brother, Wayne Utz of Ft. Thomas; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Jo seph Church, Cold Spring.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp- Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, with prayers at 10:30 a.m.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.

William Kenneth Vaught, 73, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
He was a retired electrician with Southern Railway.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Vaught of Florence; a son, Kenny K. Vaught of Florence; a daughter, Donna J. Edwards of Burlington; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
