Maysville's Newell E. Rudder
From selling mules to cemetery plots, Newell E. Rudder spent a lifetime building businesses with hard work and a sense of humor.
Mr. Rudder began his career as a mule salesman and farmer in Mason County. But he didn't stop there.
"He started a lot of businesses in the area, " said Sonia Taylor of Gahanna, Ohio, a stepdaughter.
He opened Tollesboro Bottled Gas Co. and Maysville's first Dairy Queen. Later, he turned his love of horses into a career, raising show horses and winning many competitions.
In 1969, Hillcrest Gardens cemetery needed a new owner, and Mr. Rudder was there to buy it.
Mr. Rudder, 89, of Maysville, died at 7:32 a.m. Sunday at Columbia Hospital in Maysville.
His many business dealings in Mason and Lewis counties made him a lot of friends, his step-daughter said.
Ms. Taylor said Mr. Rudder was a funny, feisty man until the end. "He had a good sense of humor. He was witty, " she said.
He was a Kentucky Colonel and member of the Lions Club.
Other survivors include his wife, Flora J. McNutt Rudder; a daughter, Charlene Pullins of Paint Lick; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Charles Price Ball, 74, of Owen County, died Friday at his home. He was a retired employee of Hyde Park Heating and Air Conditioning Co., and a member of English Baptist Church. He also was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Margaret Elizabeth Smith Ball, died in 1985.
Survivors include a brother, Dr. Robert Lewis Ball of Houston; and a sister, Marjorie Nessler of Dry Ridge.
Services were at noon today at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial was in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati.
George W. Boothby, 63, of Owenton, died Thursday at Columbia Hospital, Frankfort. He was a farmer and a member of Old Cedar Baptist Church, Owen County.
Survivors include a brother, Caddie Boothby of Owenton; sisters, Barbara Renfro of Hesler, Virginia Cinnamon, Gladys Cook and Ruth Wiard, all of Frankfort, and Lucille Heaton of Dallas.
Services were at 11 a.m. today at McDonald Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton. Burial will be in Monterey Cemetery.
Patsy A. Dallas, 59, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital, Florence. She was a waitress with Burns Brothers Truck Stop, Florence.
Survivors include daughters, Patti Norlock of Burlington, Stephanie Daniel of St. Augustine, Fla., Toni Davis of Atlanta, and Joni Palmer of Florence; a brother, Steven Smith of Belleview; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, handled arrangements.
Eva Margaret Schnatz Edgar, 76, of Alexandria, died Sunday at Wesley Hall Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Russell E. Edgar, died in 1967.
Survivors include sons, Thomas R. Edgar and Robert R. Edgar, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Kathy Villasuso of Alexandria; a brother, Peter Schnatz of Batavia, Ohio; sisters, Ann O'Connor, Catherine Franklin, Elizabeth Metzger and Josephine Long, all of Cincinnati; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria.
Roy Hayes, 63, formerly of Morning View, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Vera Mae New Jump, 70, of Independence, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday at her home.
She was an assembly worker with American Standard.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert Lee Jump of Independence; a son, Bruce W. Conover of Independence; a stepdaughter, Martha Ann Hawse of Arnett, Ala.; and stepsons, David Lee Jump of Union, Michael Wayne Jump of Arnett, Ala., and William Shields of Warsaw.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

William W. Malott Sr., 67, of Crescent Springs, died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday at his home.
He was a retired self-employed painter.
He was a member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Elsmere, and the American Legion.
His wife, Arlene Sue Loyd Malott, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Hall of Finley, Susan Rowe of Elsmere, Ruth Orling of Richwood, Debbie Inabitt of Latonia, Linda Morgan of Ludlow and Nora Perry of Crescent Springs; sons, William W. Malott Jr. of Crescent Springs and Robert Wagoner of Covington; brothers, James Malott and John Malott, both of Cincinnati, and Donald Malott of Phoenix; 18 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
John Ed McConnell, 83, of Frankfort, died Sunday at Columbia Hospital in Frankfort.
He was a former president of Kentucky Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Delta Dental.
He was author of "A Compendium of Kentucky Humor" and director emeritus of Bank One, Kentucky. He also was a member of Eastern Kentucky University Alumni Association and a former member of the Pritchard Committee of Higher Education in Kentucky.
Survivors include a brother, William Gayle McConnell of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home, Frankfort.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be Frankfort Cemetery.

Robert E. O'Neil, 78, of Ft. Thomas, died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
He was a retired metal polisher.
Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Reckley of Ft. Thomas; stepdaughters, Roberta Cunningham of Newport, N.C., Joan Gangemi and Janette Gangemi, both of Hyde Park, Mass.; stepsons, Kenneth Banker of Tampa, Fla., and Leslie Banker of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lillie Mae Scott, 89, of Covington, died Saturday at her home.
She was a bookkeeper with First National bank of Covington and a member of Independence Christian Church.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Otis Scott Sr., died in 1978.
Survivors include sons, Otis F. Scott Jr. and William L. "Duke" Scott, both of Covington; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Geneva Whitton, 77, of Williamstown, died Sunday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Williamstown Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Helen Roland and Pamela Ashcraft, both of Williamstown, and Gladys Howell of Dry Ridge; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
