Edna Torline, ran taverns
Edna Schweitzer Torline knew tough times.
She worked 18 hours a day, tending bar in the family's tavern while raising three children.
She opened her home for months to family and friends in need of a place to stay.
This year, she was a victim of the devastating spring flooding of the Licking River that washed out her home near Grants Lick.
But Mrs. Torline, 85, overcame struggles by working hard, laughing and caring for others.
She died at 2:40 p.m. Thursday at her home in Butler.
Mrs. Torline was born in John's Hill in Campbell County.
She and her late husband owned and operated seven Bud Torline's taverns in different areas of the county for almost 40 years.
They raised three children in an apartment above one of the taverns, where she worked as a bartender until she retired at the age of 65.
"She put in 18 hours a day working and raised the kids, " said her daughter, Henrietta Trappe of Butler. "She lived in the same place the bar was in. She never got away from work."
Mrs. Torline loved to help others.
She volunteered for the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, offering fire victims a place to stay and other necessities to get them on their feet again.
"She was interested in the welfare of the area, " Ms. Trappe said. "And this was something where, it made no difference who you were, you still got help. That's what she liked - anybody who needed help, she would do anything she could."
Mrs. Torline died of cancer, just months after she and Ms. Trappe, who were washed out of the home they were living in near Grants Lick, found a new home in Butler.
