Walker "Pat' Holt, volunteer and Christian
Whether it was visiting the sick or collecting and selling old newspapers on his own to raise money for the Shriners Burns Institute, Walker Patterson "Pat" Holt always found something to do for other people.
His motivation was simple: "He was a Christian doer. He liked to do things that were good, " said his wife of nearly 45 years, Hester Susan Penick Simpson Holt.
Mr. Holt of Covington, a life-long volunteer and Elder Emeritus of First Christian Church in Covington, died at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. He was 84.
He'd been born on a farm in Adair County, near Columbia, but moved to Cincinnati when he was 20 to work at a furniture store. He met his wife while she was living in Covington, and they moved to Norwood, Ohio, to raise her four children by a previous marriage.
Around that time, Mr. Holt became in volved with the First Christian Church.
Mr. Holt visited the sick and people who had "fallen away from God" every month, to help them pray, run errands or take Holy Communion, Mrs. Holt said.
A Shriner who belonged to the Syrian Temple in Cincinnati, Mr. Holt visited children every year at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Lexington.
He was a member of Hood Lodge No. 839 F&AM in Columbia and a member of the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Valley of Cincinnati. He also was a past chairman of the General Board of Trustees of the church. He retired from the Artistic Furniture Co. in Cincinnati at 65.
Mr. Holt ran his own fund-raising projects by collecting used papers from neighbors and recycling them, said his step-daughter, Inez Jean Simpson of Cincinnati.
"When he was no longer able to participate rigorously in the Shrine, he did his own little thing, where he would go to people and ask them to save their papers, " she said. "Every Saturday, he'd pick them up and then drop them off at the Shrine tem ple. . . . That made money for the Shriner Burns Institute."
After bypass heart surgery in 1983 left him unable to lift bundles of used paper, he volunteered by driving cancer patients to the hospital, Ms. Simpson said.
"I think what people remember most about him is he always had a smile on his face, " she said. "If anyone said, "Pat, could you do this for me?' it was always, "When and where?' "
