Lewis D. Renchen worked for railroad, loved family
The railroad was Lewis D. Renchen's life.
As a young man living in Vanceburg, he maintained and repaired signals for the C&O; Railroad.
When he came back from serving in the Army during World War II, he spent another 37 years doing the same thing for the Penn Central Railroad.
"He worked all those years as a signal man, working on the flashers on the railroad tracks. They climbed the poles and did electrical work, " said his wife, Mary Morgan Renchen.
After he retired, Renchen lived a quiet life, visiting with children and grandchildren, going to yard sales, piecing together jig-saw puzzles.
He died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas.
He was 73.
Renchen grew up in Vanceburg, where he met his wife of 49 years. They followed a railroad job to Northern Kentucky, where they settled and eventually made a home in Bellevue.
They lived there for about 45 years and raised four children.
He was a collector, Ms. Renchen said, and yard sales were his favorite place to find antiques, magazines and jig-saw puzzles.
The couple scouted for yard-sale bargains nearly every weekend.
"I guess it was just, you get out and you meet
people, " she said. "You maybe buy something, maybe a magazine or a puzzle."
As the children grew older, he loved to have them and the grandchildren over for lunches, dinners and holidays.
"The grandchildren were the apple of his eyes, and of course, the children were, too."
As they grew older, the couple liked the comfortable time they shared together alone.
"As we grew older, we got more private, me and him, " she said.
"I don't know how to express it. He was just honest, respected."
