Sister Hildegarde Ricken, longtime teacher in N. Ky.
Sister Hildegarde Ricken, O.S.B., a lifelong educator and volunteer, died Sunday at St. Walburg Monastery Infirmary in Villa Hills. She was 73.
Sister Hildegarde grew up in Covington, the oldest of four sisters. She attended high school at Villa Madonna Academy in Villa Hills.
She was orphaned around the age of 13, when her mother and father died about a year apart. She was enrolled in boarding school at Villa Madonna, and she visited her sisters at a local orphanage.
Sister Hildegarde entered the Benedictine religious order in 1941. She began teaching for the Archdiocese of Covington at Holy Cross School in Latonia in 1952, her first of many teaching jobs around Northern Kentucky.
She also taught elementary students at St. Anthony School in Bellevue; St. James School in Brooksville; St. Benedict in Covington; St. John in Georgetown and St. Bernard School in Dayton, where she retired in 1987.
In her later years, she volunteered at social service agencies, including the Welcome House in Covington. She also served as a teacher's aide in the kindergarten of Mary Queen of Heaven School in Boone County.
"She was a good teacher and had many, many friends, particularly among parents of students she taught, " said Sister Andrea, who knew Sister Hildegarde for about 40 years.
"She was a very generous, giving person who tried to make life good for everyone."
Sister Hildegarde was diagnosed with cancer last year.
"Some people with cancer have a great deal of pain, " Sister Andrea said. "But she didn't have that, she was always optimistic.
"It was a good thing to watch, because she took it so well. She taught us what it means to die graciously."
