Charles Carroll, generous volunteer

Charles "Chick" Carroll, a retired postal worker who devoted time, energy and compassion to the Salvation Army, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. The Latonia resident was 65.

Mr. Carroll grew up in Covington and went to Holmes High School. He graduated in 1950, and served in the Marine Corps from 1950-1951, during the Korean War.

After returning from the war, Mr. Carroll became a postal worker in downtown Covington. He met his wife, Barbara Carter Carroll, in 1961, and they married in 1963.

The couple moved to Latonia and raised two children. During that time, Mr. Carroll became actively involved with the Salvation Army. He was a lay minister for one of the Salvation Army's worship centers, the Cincinnati Citadel in Over-the-Rhine. Some holidays, he stood on street corners, manning the traditional kettle and seeking donations.

He taught Sunday school to young adults, most of whom lived in the inner-city, for about 30 years.

"Whatever they needed to talk about, they knew he was there, " said Mrs. Carroll.

"That's why I didn't think he was going to die - he wasn't finished with those kids yet."

Mr. Carroll worked at the post office in downtown Covington for 20 years before transferring to the Ludlow office. He worked there for 10 years before retiring in 1996.

Other survivors include a son, Charles H. Carroll of Latonia; a daughter, Becky Carroll of Latonia; a brother, Hank Carroll of Surfside Beach, S.C.; a sister, Norma Jean Johnson of Homosassa, Fla.
