Lige Delaney put his heart into family, young athletes

Through good seasons and bad, warm August evenings and rainy October nights, Lige Delaney was on the sidelines of every Bellevue High School football game from 1961 to 1996 to root for his boys.

"He loved it. That was his life. That's what he did. He ate and breathed football, " said Carol J. Rich of Bellevue, a daughter.

Mr. Delaney grew up poor, spending much of his childhood in a Hamilton County orphanage. Though his fortunes changed, he never forgot what it meant to be needy.

Mr. Delaney rose every Saturday morning for years to run the clothes and food closet at Trinity Baptist Church in Newport.

Likewise, he bought shoes for football players at Bellevue High who couldn't afford them.

"He was a real community volunteer, " Mrs. Rich said.

"He was always real proud of all his children's accomplishments. Anything we did he was always real proud, and he'd like to brag about it, " Mrs. Rich said.

Mr. Delaney received a hero's welcome this fall when he managed to attend a Bellevue football practice.
