Michael C. Cross, helped others
Even a disabling illness couldn't stop Michael C. Cross Sr. from doing things for others and his community.
"He would sit on the porch in his wheelchair and pass out candy to the kids. He was always asking me to buy some more.
They would stop by to see him, and even when he was in the hospital they would ask about him, " said Jean Maloney Cross, Mr. Cross's wife of 58 years.
Mr. Cross, 79, of Bromley, died early Sunday in Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired inspector with the Kenton County Sanitation District, where he worked for many years, and had also worked at an oil refinery.
When it came to the City of Bromley, Mr. Cross was always there to lend a hand.
He was a former Bromley Auxiliary Police officer and a past president and lieutenant of the Bromley Volunteer Fire Department.
He was also a member of several committees of the Northern Kentucky Volunteer Fire Departments Association.
"He was very active in Bromley. He was a swell fellow, " said Ludlow resident and former Kenton Circuit Clerk Ed Schroeder.
Mr. Cross enthusiastically pitched in when
the fire department held street festivals to raise money. "He always had a booth for the carnivals, and he worked up a storm, " said Mrs. Cross.
Mr. Cross also was a member of the Northern Kentucky Democratic Club, and a former door keeper of the Kentucky state Senate for a number of sessions of the Kentucky General Assembly, his wife said.
Mr. Cross was a former shop steward of the Oil Workers of America Union and a former board member of Northern Kentucky Polio Society.
He was a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include sons, Michael C. Cross Jr. of Burlington, Patrick Cross of Edgewood and Joseph Cross of Latonia; daughters, Nancy King of Union and Irene Smith of New Whiteland, Ind.; a sister, Norma Jo Willoughby of Mt. Sterling; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sts. Boniface and James Church.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Matthew Fugate, 7, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Charley W. Lang, 86, of Harrison County, died Saturday at Offutt's Family Care in Georgetown.
He was a retired farmer and a member of St. Edward Church, Harrison County.
Survivors include a son, Victor E. Lang of Lexington; a daughter, Charlotte Hutchison of Harrison County; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana.
Burial will be in St. Edward Cemetery, Harrison County.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
Betty M. Lanter, 78, of Union, died at 9:50 a.m. Saturday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Richwood Presbyterian Church, Walton.
She was a member of the Boone County Garden Club, the Stringtown Quilters Guild and the Cincinnati Dulcimer Society.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Kenneth E. Lanter; daughters, Jeanine Lanter and Kathryn Kohake, both of Florence, Kare Lee of Walton, and Sandra Raynor of Phoenix; a brother, Roy. E. McLane of Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Richwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Walton.

Nadine Kinman Martin, 59, of Corinth, died at 9:44 p.m. Saturday at her home, after an extended illness.
She was a retired custodian of Mason-Corinth Elementary School, and a member of Corinth Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Gayle Martin; her mother, Emma Osbourn Kinman of Williamstown; brothers, Thurman Kinman of Jonesville, James Kinman, Kenneth Kinman and Harold Kinman, all of Hartford, Ala.; and sisters, Linda Woodyard of Williamstown, Betty Hunter, Freda Stephenson and Glenna Smith, all of Crittenden.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Eckler Cemetery, Corinth.

Dr. Robert McCabe, 76, of Crescent Springs, died at 7:50 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

John McGinnis, 80, of Kenton County, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington, of injuries suffered in an auto accident.

Billie Jeane Whitley Merrifield, 50, of Florence, died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
She was a bar manager with Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423, Elsmere, and a member of the post Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Merrifield; sons, Gary Lightner and Brandon Lightner, both of Florence; daughters, Shelley Finn and Deaven Merrifield, both of Florence; her mother, Esther D'Allesandro of Largo, Fla.; brothers, Paul Whitley of Guipsum, Colo., Mike Whitley of San Diego and Danny Whitley of Young Harris, Ga.; sisters, Joyce Braund of Cincinnati, Terri Simms of Florence, Claudia Hurst of Dry Ridge, Donna Weir of Lexington and Robin Adkisson of Ft. Mitchell; and five grandchildren.

Laura A. Morris, 90, of Newport, died at 10:22 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport.
She was a retired seamstress with Hyde Park Clothing, Newport, and a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Newport.
She was a member of St. John Golden Age Senior Citizens, Dayton AARP, Bellevue Christian Neighbors and Bellevue Vets.
Her husband, Edwin Morris, died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Sturm of Ft. Thomas; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Michael Rider, 31, of Newport, died Friday at St. Luke
Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He worked for New Perceptions, Edgewood.
Survivors include his mother, Velma Rider of Covington; and sisters, Teri Rider of Florence, Lisa Rider of Walton, Robin Rider Osborne of Erlanger and Nancy Ruby of Independence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Lucy Evelyn Seng, 58, of Crescent Springs, died at 11:57 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a sister, Alberta Vaught of Taylor Mill; and brothers, Roy Seng of Crescent Park, John Seng and Robert Seng, both of Crescent Springs, and Elmer Seng of Crittenden.

Judith "Sissy" Yost, 33, of Independence, died at 1 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a team member of Redwood Rehabilitation Center, Ft. Mitchell, a member of the Redwood Cheerleaders, a Girl Scout and a Special Olympics participant.
Survivors include her mother, Mary Johnson Yost; a brother, Wayne Turner of Ft. Thomas; and a sister, Lesley Yost of Ft. Mitchell.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas.
