William McKinley, rail worker
When William R. McKinley Jr. wasn't working in the yard office of the B&O; Railroad, he was enjoying friends and family, traveling overseas, raising funds for the American Legion - or playing golf.
"That was his pastime, " said his wife, Loretta Dusing McKinley. "He loved it."
Mr. McKinley died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West. The Ludlow resident was 74.
He grew up in Cincinnati and went into the Army in 1943. He was stationed overseas and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the last major counter-offensive by the Germans in World War II.
When he returned to the United States, he went to work for the B&O; Railroad as a clerk in the yard office. His job was to trace rail cars and find lost freight, said Mrs. McKinley.
In his spare time, he loved to go on golf outings with friends and fellow members of the American Legion Guth Brothers Post No. 111 in Cincinnati.
It was while he was working that he met his wife, who was a railroad yard clerk for the C&O; Railroad. They talked to each other frequently by telephone, coordinating freight and rail cars, she said.
"I talked to him for about two years on the telephone, but it was strictly business, " she said. "We never met. Then, his friends kind of fixed us up."
They married
in 1974, when Mr. McKinley was 51. He moved to Ft. Mitchell, where Mrs. McKinley lived, and they stayed there for seven years. They moved to Ludlow in 1981.
After McKinley retired from the railroad in 1983, after 42 years, he and his wife began traveling. They took trips overseas to Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom and spent a couple of months each year with his sister, Alice Cravens of St. Petersburg, Fla.
"We were pretty lucky, " Mrs. McKinley said. "We had 23 wonderful years."
Mr. McKinley also was a member of St. Boniface and James Church in Ludlow.
Besides his wife and sister, survivors include several nieces and nephews.
