Entrepreneur Oren Long, helped others

Oren Long was working in his father's egg business on the Cincinnati riverfront as a young man when he came upon a way to make some extra money.

He and his brother, Chester, who died about 10 years ago, started picking up wooden barrels and cleaning them for businesses.

With decades of hard work, they became the owners of several companies, including Cincinnati Drum Service Inc. in Ludlow; Indianapolis Drum; Long Brothers Bag Co. and Long-Ace Co. of Kenner, La. The companies are ongoing.

"They were classic American entrepreneurs, " said one of Oren Long's sons, Barry M. Long of Union.

Oren Long, 76, of Erlanger, died Monday at his home.

He was on the board of trustees for the Erlanger United Methodist Church.

In his youth, Mr. Long was a star athlete. He was an all-state high school basketball player at Holmes High School in the 1930s and an All-American volleyball player.

He was a charter member of Tri-City YMCA and a benefactor of Camp Ernst in Boone Coun ty. Mr. Long was instrumental in the development of the Grace Edgett Child Development Center in Erlanger and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Jane Elizabeth Roth Long, died in 1995.

Other survivors include sons, Jeff Long of West Chester, Ohio, Dennis L. Long of Erlanger and Don Long of Crescent Springs; a daughter, Lynn Long Lambert of Crestview Hills; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, and from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of services at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Memorials are suggested to the church or Grace Edgett Child Development Center, both at 31 Commonwealth Ave., Erlanger, 41018, or Camp Ernst, 7615 Camp Ernst Road, Burlington, 41005.

Norbert J. Allgeyer, 70, of Villa Hills, died at 9 a.m. Monday at his home. He was a retired deputy sheriff with Kenton County Sheriff's Department, and had been a special deputy since his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs; Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus, Ludlow, and a charter member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 20, Kenton County. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of World War II Vets of Ludlow.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Heywood Allgeyer; a daughter, Amy Louise Cook of Ft. Thomas; sisters, Bernadette Allgeyer of Ft. Mitchell and Thelma Foltz of Villa Hills; and four grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, with FOP services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Goshen cemetery in Goshen, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the Norbert J. Allgeyer Scholarship Fund of FOP Lodge No. 20, P. O. Box 18249, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Clifford V. Carcifero, 52, of Ft. Thomas, died Sunday at his home. He was an electrician and a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local No. 212, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Evans Carcifero; a daughter, Lisa Carcifero of Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Chris Carcifero of Rhode Island; stepdaughters, Vickie Augst and Connie Jewel, both of Batavia, Ohio, and Rhonda Fant of Goshen, Ohio; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Steven R. Dirkes, 40, of Ft. Wright, died at 5:17 p.m. Saturday at Drake Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a disabled welder and a welding teacher. His father, Nicholas Dirkes, died in 1996. His mother, Marie Dirkes, died Sept. 8.

Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Dirkes of Ft. Mitchell; sisters, Anne Sanders of Crescent Park, Mary Dirkes of Ft. Wright and Elaine Oldiges of Melbourne; and brothers, Nicholas Dirkes of Taylor Mill, Terrence Dirkes of Cincinnati and James Dirkes of Ft. Wright.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials: Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, 45242.

Audrey Henry, 85, of Dry Ridge, died at 4:21 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.

Louis L. Hulker, 71, of Florence, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a truck driver with Teamsters Local No. 100, Cincinnati, and a bus driver with Boone County Schools. He was a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church, Union.

Survivors include his wife, La Donna Kelley Hulker; a son, Jerry L. Hulker of Warsaw; a stepson, Lee Reid of Florence; daughters, Betty Wells of East Bernstadt, Ky., and Tonya Bramlett of Warsaw; a stepdaughter, Shelley Kinman of Florence; a sister, Alberta Whaley of Independence; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials: St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, 41014.

Betty Spears Ingguls, 72, of Covington, died Saturday at the Worthington Nursing Home, Worthington, Ohio.

Survivors include sons, John Ingguls and Andra Ingguls, both of Covington; daughters, Rebecca Billingsley of Dayton, Ohio, Gwendolyn Walker of Lexington, Diana Ingguls Jouett of Covington and Charie Baker of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Fred Wallace Spears of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Mary A. Talley of Cincinnati; 30 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the United Community Church, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Gregory Phillip Jacobs, 48, of Florence, died at 1:44 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a cab driver with Queen City Cab Co.

Survivors include sisters, Barbara Glover of Covington and Sandra Casebolt of Erlanger.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials: the charity of the donor's choice.

Alice Florence Jones, 88, of Falmouth, died Monday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. She was a homemaker and a member of Blanket Creek Baptist Church. Her husband, Omer Jones, died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Cecil Jones of Falmouth; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials: Blanket Creek Baptist Church or Southside Church of Christ.

Virginia "Genny" Boots Maddox, 74, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a cook with Days Inn Hotel, Richwood, and a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Mason E. Boots of Burlington; a daughter, Rita Justice of Newport; stepdaughters, Freda Carr of Florence and Phyllis Ruth of Durham, N.C.; sisters, Rosa Lee Bibb of Florence and Dorothy Bruce of Covington; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

Ruby E. Miller, 76, of Villa Hills, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired cafeteria worker with Northern Kentucky University and a member of Lenoxburg Baptist Church. Her husband, Jeff Miller, died in 1978.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Miller of Villa Hills; and a sister, Alberta Miller of Cynthiana.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery. Memorials: American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, 41042.

Imelda "Bunch" O'Day, 81, of Ft. Thomas, died at 8:08 a.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include her husband, John O'Day; a son, John Patrick O'Day of Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Peggy Villani of Holiday, Fla.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials: Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Ft. Thomas, 41075.

Robert Giles Poe, 71, of Brooksville, died at 1:21 p.m. Saturday at his winter home in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was a sales manager with Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance, and chairman of the board of First National Bank, Brooksville. He was a former Brooksville city councilman and a former president of Brooksville Lions Club. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II. A son, Randall Lynn Poe, died in 1976.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Hawkins Poe; a daughter, Rebecca Ann Poe Venn of Ashland; a son, Robert Alan Poe of Chenango, Colo.; his mother, Gladys Coleman Poe; a brother, Ronald Coleman Poe of Fairlee, Vt.; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Brooksville Cemetery. Visitation: from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Memorials: American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, 41042, or Brooksville Volunteer Fire Department, Brooksville, 41004.

Charles A. Thomas, 72, of Covington, died Sunday at his home. He was an exterminator with Orkin Exterminating Co. His wife, Artie Robinson Thomas, died in 1996.

Survivors include a stepson, James S. Mulberry of Williamstown; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
