William Snelson, master gardener
William Parker Snelson loved to grow things, from tobacco to shrubbery, flowers and citrus trees.
"We had a visitor once in Florida, and she counted 110 varieties, I believe it was, of shrubs, flowers and trees, and he did it all, " longtime friend Louise Cobb said of Mr. Snelson.
Mr. Snelson, 82, of Owenton, died Saturday in Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla.
A lifelong bachelor, Mr. Snelson made his home for many years with Thomas and Louise Cobb. He was a partner with her husband in many business endeavors, Mrs. Cobb said.
"After he got out of the service, he worked at the Veterans Hospital in Lexington and then was the farm manager at Eastern State Hospital, " Mrs. Cobb said of Mr. Snelson. "He hired my husband as the assistant manager. They raised tobacco for a lady there in Fayette County, and both having farm backgrounds, decided they liked it so much they bought a farm together in Owen County.
"They had about 300 acres and raised beef and dairy cattle, " Mrs. Cobb said.
The partners then went to Wisconsin, where they operated a one-stop store. "They had anything that someone might have gone off and forgotten to bring with them, " Mrs. Cobb said of the store, in Cable, Wisc.
The business was in the heart of a recreation area where skiing, fishing and hunting were popular, she said. "He stayed there for a couple of years, but it was so cold he came back to Kentucky, " Mrs. Cobb said of Mr. Snelson.
Mr. Snelson then operated a coin laundry, Parker's Laundromat in Owenton, for a number of years, Mrs. Cobb said.
The Cobbs began living part of the year in Florida and Mr. Snelson spent time with them, growing flowers, shrubs and citrus trees, she said.
"He loved to travel, and he was interested in others who might have had his unusual name. He would always look in the phone books wherever he went, but said he only found about five other people with the name of Snelson, other than his immediate family, " Mrs. Cobb said.
Mr. Snelson was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Owenton. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, and a member of Disabled American Veterans, Frankfort.
